Yutori Wellness: Japanese Acupuncture and Bodywork in the Heart of Shoreditch

Yutori Wellness

Yutori Wellness is a traditional Japanese medicine clinic in Shoreditch, East London, offering acupuncture, shiatsu, massage, Reiki and bodywork within a calm, considered space a few minutes’ walk from Shoreditch High Street, Liverpool Street and Old Street stations. Its name comes from a Japanese concept — yutori (ゆとり) — that invites us to slow down, leave some breathing room and create spaciousness, and that idea runs through everything the clinic does.

Tucked away from the main streets at Lion House on Plough Yard, the clinic was designed to bring together seasoned practitioners trained in various Japanese styles of medicine. Treatments are grounded in classical practice, tailored to the individual and attentive to each person’s needs, with the intention of helping the body step away from the pace of the city and release stress, pain and imbalance.

Treating the Whole, Not Just the Parts

The philosophy behind Yutori Wellness is that the human body is an exceptional, intelligent organism capable of overcoming a great deal — but that when life becomes cluttered, it can struggle to do what it knows how to do best. Whether the issue is a sprained ankle, a tweaked neck, insomnia, digestive trouble, anxiety or low mood, the clinic aims to create the conditions for the body to soften, reset and return to a more natural state of wellbeing.

That means looking for root causes rather than isolated symptoms, and treating the whole person. Practitioners bring together Japanese acupuncture, shiatsu, massage therapy and other holistic approaches, and each has a distinct way of working, so that clients can choose the practitioner — or the modality — that best supports what they are experiencing.

Dr Lauren Haythe: Acupuncture Meets Structural Bodywork

Among the clinic’s practitioners is Dr Lauren Haythe, who holds a Doctorate of Acupuncture and is also a trained Kinesis Myofascial Integration (KMI) bodyworker. Her sessions combine Japanese acupuncture with myofascial bodywork in a structural and integrative approach that supports pain, gut health, gynaecological issues, immune support, emotional wellbeing and overall balance, with visceral manipulation and scar work available within any session.

Her training spans both sides of the Atlantic. She became a certified KMI practitioner in 2010 after studying under the method’s founder, Tom Myers, and James Earls in Oxford, and later broadened her structural integration practice through orthopaedic pain management and visceral manipulation with the Barral Institute. She qualified as a licensed bodyworker in New York after graduating from the Swedish Institute, gained her Master of Science in Acupuncture with honours from Tristate College of Acupuncture, completed Nigel Dawes’s Kampo programme in Japanese herbs and obtained her doctorate from Pacific College of Acupuncture in New York City. She is also certified in Traditional Japanese Acupuncture through the TJA Institute and has taken part in human dissection courses to deepen her anatomical knowledge, going on to assist Myers in some of his teaching.

Her aim, in her own words, is to merge the practical knowledge of Western anatomy with the Eastern principles of medicine, so that each patient is treated under a plan that serves their unique and individual needs.

A Wide Range of Japanese Modalities

True to the Japanese tradition, acupuncture at Yutori uses exceptionally fine needles and a very hands-on approach, palpating the body to find the most effective points. Moxibustion — the burning of an herb over a protective cream on an acupuncture point — may also be used, as may the Teishin, a tool that works on fascia and acupuncture points without puncturing the skin, and Dashin, a gentle technique for releasing tension in the abdomen.

Shiatsu is offered in the Zen Shiatsu style developed by Shizuto Masunaga, using palms, fingers, elbows and knees along the meridians to support nervous system regulation, relaxation and internal balance, either on a futon or, in the case of AromaShiatsu, on the table with a bespoke blend of essential oils. Myofascial bodywork addresses chronic tension, pain and postural imbalance, while Reiki, offered through light touch, is often sought for stress, burnout and emotional overwhelm.

The clinic also provides Chi Nei Tsang abdominal therapy, deeper pelvic and womb work for women, prenatal massage and postnatal restoration, mind-body therapy, Tibetan bowl sound therapy, facial reflexology and the traditional Japanese facial techniques of Kobido and Hadado.
