Wizz Air Unveils £37 Flights from London to Europe’s Hidden Gem: The Least Visited Country

Wizz Air has announced the launch of a new route from London Gatwick, providing an exciting opportunity for those keen on exploring less-trodden paths in Europe. From the end of October, travellers can book flights to Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, with bookings available online starting from the 25th. The new service will operate four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with journey times of approximately three hours and twenty minutes, running year-round.

Discovering Chișinău: An Emerging European Gem

Chișinău has been recognised as one of Eastern Europe’s rising destinations, and the introduction of this route enhances Wizz Air’s existing flights from London Luton Airport. One-way fares begin at a modest £36.99, which includes one carry-on bag of maximum dimensions 40x30x20cm. The city, home to nearly a third of Moldova’s population, boasts a blend of contemporary high-rise apartments, Soviet-era architecture, and unique historical edifices.

Although much of the city centre was devastated during World War II, certain areas, such as Strada Columna, remarkably survived the bombings, showcasing charming 19th-century merchant houses and tranquil courtyards. One of the city’s highlights is Parcul Central Ștefan cel Mare, Moldova’s oldest park, adorned with busts of the nation’s celebrated writers. Adjacent to the park stands The Triumphal Arch, a popular photographic attraction built to honour the Russian Empire’s victory over the Ottoman Empire. Behind this striking structure lies the Cathedral of Christ’s Nativity, designed by a Russian architect in a neoclassical style, featuring a grand dome and adorned with magnificent murals and gilded artefacts.

Chișinău is a vibrant destination throughout the year. From early December to mid-January, Piața Marii Adunări Naționale transforms into a festive wonderland, hosting Christmas markets in line with the country’s Orthodox celebrations.

While Moldova’s wine industry may be relatively modest, it boasts a rich heritage and is one of Europe’s oldest. The Codru region, easily accessible from Chișinău, is merely half an hour away and is renowned for its rolling vineyards, offering a serene escape from the urban landscape. A day trip to Mileștii Mici to the south is also highly recommended; this winery is famous for holding the Guinness World Record for the largest wine collection globally, featuring over two million bottles. The extensive cellar stretches over 120 miles, though currently only 34 miles are in operation, with some of its oldest vintages dating back to the 1970s.
