UK’s Unwavering Support for Ukraine: Strong Message Delivered at UN Security Council

Today marks Ukraine’s Independence Day, a significant occasion to reaffirm the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the rights of its citizens to shape their own destiny. It is a day dedicated to celebrating the rich history, vibrant culture, and resilient spirit of the Ukrainian people, while also reaffirming international friendships and support.

Upholding Ukraine’s Sovereignty and Freedom

For more than a decade, Russia has sought to undermine Ukraine’s rights to sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as its ability to determine its own future. This aggression began with the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, escalated into a full-scale invasion in 2022, and continues today through relentless attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure across Ukraine.

Since February 2022, over 17,000 Ukrainian civilians have tragically lost their lives, and approximately 52,000 have been injured. Disturbingly, in July alone, 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 were injured, marking one of the deadliest months in recent years as Russia intensified its assaults, launching hundreds of missiles and drones at urban centres. The grim reality equates to one civilian casualty every 15 minutes.

Respect for international humanitarian law is imperative. The impact on Ukraine’s children has been particularly devastating, with more than 3,900 child casualties reported since 2022. Countless children have lost their families and homes, enduring months in underground shelters. Alarmingly, thousands have been forcibly deported from their homeland.

On this day, we remember not only the lives lost and the upheaval caused but also the extraordinary resilience demonstrated by Ukrainians in their fight to defend their country, freedom, and the right to self-determination.

Celebrating Ukraine’s Rich Cultural Heritage

As we join in the celebrations of Ukraine’s history, culture, and spirit, it is disheartening to see how Russia has targeted the nation’s cultural landmarks. Notable sites such as Kyiv’s historic Petrivka book market and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have suffered damage. In the territories currently under occupation, the Russian authorities have systematically dismantled Ukrainian-language education and coerced residents into adopting Russian citizenship.

However, Ukraine’s history and culture are resilient. As His Majesty King Charles expressed in his message to President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people, today is an opportunity to “reflect upon Ukraine’s proud history, rich culture and indomitable national spirit,” while honouring the “extraordinary fortitude” displayed by Ukrainians in safeguarding their identity and values.

Renewed Commitment to Friendship and Support

On this important day, United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham is present in Kyiv to convey a strong message of solidarity. He assures the people of Ukraine that “on Ukraine’s 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt—the United Kingdom stands firmly behind you today and for as long as it takes.”

The United Kingdom remains committed to supporting Ukraine as it exercises its lawful right to self-defence, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. We echo Ukraine’s call for a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire, advocating for a just and lasting peace, while urging Russia to reciprocate this commitment.

President Zelenskyy, it is vital that Ukraine’s future is determined by its own citizens. The country’s language, culture, and history cannot be erased through attacks, occupation, or coercion. Today, we celebrate Ukraine and renew our unwavering support for its sovereignty and freedoms—today and every day, for as long as it takes.
