UK Welcomes Syrian Democratic Forces’ Integration into Central Government: Statement at UN Security Council

After enduring decades of conflict and unrest, Syria now stands at a critical juncture, presenting a unique opportunity to transition towards a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future. The United Kingdom expresses its support for Secretary-General Guterres’ recent visit to Damascus, which marks a significant milestone in Syria’s political recovery and illustrates the strengthening relationship between the Syrian government and the United Nations.

Strengthening Ties and Institutional Support

The UK hopes that this collaboration will continue to deepen, particularly with the anticipated relocation of the Special Envoy’s Office to Damascus. Furthermore, the recent announcement regarding the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into central government structures is viewed as a crucial step towards achieving a cohesive and unified Syria.

The United Kingdom reaffirms its commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, poised to offer support as the Syrian government works to fortify its institutions. It is imperative that progress within Syria is mirrored across the broader region. In this context, we welcome the recent direct talks between Israel and Syria, held in Jordan, which represent a positive development towards long-term peace.

Encouraging Continued Dialogue for Regional Stability

We urge both parties to maintain an open dialogue, as this will enhance security for both nations and contribute to stability in the wider region. However, further military strikes, such as those witnessed in Idlib last week, pose a threat to the fragile progress that Syria has achieved during this pivotal period.

Last week also marked the thirteenth anniversary of the horrific Ghouta attack, where over 1,400 individuals lost their lives due to the Assad regime’s use of sarin nerve gas against its own citizens. We take this moment to remember the victims and extend our condolences to their families.

Opposition to Chemical Weapons and Support for Recovery

The United Kingdom remains steadfast in its condemnation of the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances, recognising it as a serious violation of international law and a dark chapter in the Syrian conflict. We acknowledge the measures taken by the Government of Syria towards resolving this issue and support the nation’s recovery initiatives, such as the Breath of Freedom Taskforce and the cooperative efforts with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Additionally, we welcome the United States’ recent decision to remove Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, marking another significant milestone on Syria’s path to prosperity and stability.

Addressing Ongoing Humanitarian Challenges

Despite these advancements, significant challenges persist. Over 15 million individuals in Syria currently require humanitarian assistance, with more than 7 million facing acute food insecurity. Ongoing sectarian tensions, coupled with regional instability and violence, threaten to undermine the hard-won peace.

The international community faces a clear mandate: to collaborate with and support the Government of Syria in protecting and enhancing the progress achieved thus far. With sustained assistance, Syria can transcend the dangers and divisions of its past and embark on a journey towards a more stable and peaceful future.
