Condemnation of Iranian Aggression
The United Kingdom unequivocally condemns the recent attacks initiated by Iran in the region, particularly those targeting commercial shipping. These actions highlight the need for a united stance among Gulf and regional partners, and we will continue to demonstrate our solidarity with them.
The precarious nature of the current situation accentuates the pressing necessity to maintain momentum in the diplomatic process. We stand alongside our partners in advocating for de-escalation and a renewed commitment to diplomacy. It is encouraging to hear reports indicating that both parties are re-engaging in discussions.
Concerns Over Iran’s Nuclear Programme
The longstanding apprehensions of the UK concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions remain not only pertinent but also critically serious. Due to Iran’s substantial failure to fulfil its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), the United Kingdom, in collaboration with France and Germany, initiated the snapback mechanism. This process was completed on 28 September 2025.
Consequently, Council resolution 2231 remains in effect, and it is essential that this Council remains actively engaged with the Iranian nuclear issue. The provisions of the six resolutions that had been previously lifted have now been reinstated, which includes a binding arms embargo affecting both parties.
Compliance and Verification Standards
We urge all UN Member States to adhere fully to the stipulations set forth in the relevant resolutions. The US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding clearly states that Iran is prohibited from procuring or developing nuclear weapons. To achieve this, Iran must take demonstrable, verifiable, and meaningful actions, including full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and effective monitoring of all nuclear materials and facilities.
Verification is not merely a technical requirement; it is fundamental to establishing trust, fostering confidence, and ensuring the long-term viability of any agreement. The ultimate aim must be to reach a negotiated settlement that bolsters both international and regional security, prevents nuclear proliferation, and assures the global community that Iran’s nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes.
