On Friday, 9 October, Paul Turner, the British High Commissioner, officially handed over a new cocoa processing machine to Kokonut Pacific Solomon Islands (KOSI), a social enterprise dedicated to enhancing the value of locally produced cocoa.
KOSI aims to expand its operations and increase the value added to cocoa, thereby generating more significant advantages for local producers. Founded in Honiara in 2004, KOSI processes both coconuts and cocoa. Today, it supports over 1,000 farmers nationwide, offering training, market access, and various business opportunities that bolster rural incomes and create local employment.
The enterprise plays a crucial role in connecting farmers with international markets, sourcing cocoa from its extensive network of village producers. Its contributions to agribusiness, exports, and community development have earned it national recognition.
Strengthening Local Economies through Cocoa
During the handover ceremony, High Commissioner Turner expressed pride in supporting social enterprises like KOSI, which serve as essential links between farmers and global markets. He highlighted the importance of adding value to local products and fostering community prosperity throughout the Solomon Islands.
The newly introduced cocoa machine is anticipated to boost the production of chocolate paste and finished chocolate goods, enabling KOSI to satisfy local demand while also enhancing its capacity for exports to international markets, including the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Remarkably, KOSI has developed its domestic market to the extent that 50% of its cocoa production is now consumed within the Solomon Islands.
Building International Partnerships in the Cocoa Sector
In recent years, the United Kingdom has intensified its engagement with the cocoa industry in the Solomon Islands. In 2024, a delegation of UK cocoa buyers visited the nation to establish new partnerships with local producers. This initiative culminated in the selection of Solomon Islands cocoa as the primary ingredient for a new UK chocolate brand, Cocoa Sisters.
Furthermore, the UK has lent its support to Solomon Islands cocoa bean producers and chocolate makers by facilitating their participation in the Amsterdam “Chocoa” Fair, scheduled for February 2025. This event, recognised as Europe’s largest cocoa trade fair, will provide vital opportunities for Solomon Islands producers to connect with potential buyers from the UK and across Europe.
