The United Kingdom acknowledges the adoption of resolution 2835, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for an additional twelve months.
We express our gratitude to fellow Council members for their constructive engagement during the negotiations.
This renewed mandate will enhance UNSMIL’s capacity to promote a political process that is both Libyan-led and Libyan-owned.
It empowers the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Tetteh to continue her efforts in advancing the established roadmap.
The resolution calls upon Libyan parties to honour their commitments as outlined in the ‘Smaller Convening’ agreement, which aims to facilitate free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections within a two-year timeframe.
Reinforcing Institutional Reunification
Moreover, it aims to build momentum towards the reunification of Libyan institutions, including judicial, military, and security bodies.
This resolution provides a solid foundation for UNSMIL to assist Libyan parties in establishing a unified executive authority and conveys a strong message that the efforts of Libyan actors should not be undermined.
It also acknowledges the vital work undertaken by UNSMIL in the fields of human rights and the rule of law, while encouraging the Mission to continue promoting the full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation of women in the political arena.
Commitment to Democratic Values
Madam President, the United Kingdom reiterates its unwavering support for UNSMIL and for the efforts of SRSG Tetteh in advancing the political process.
We urge all parties to fulfil their commitments, ensuring that Libyans are afforded the democratic choices, economic opportunities, and security they rightfully seek.
