UK Sends Search and Rescue Team and Emergency Aid to Assist Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts

The United Kingdom is mobilising an initial £2 million in humanitarian aid in response to the catastrophic earthquakes that have struck Venezuela. This funding will facilitate a swift deployment of specialised search and rescue teams in a bid to save lives and support those affected.

Specialist Search and Rescue Team Deployed

Supported by the Royal Air Force, the UK’s International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR) team, comprising 68 personnel and six specially trained search dogs, has commenced its mission to assist in locating and rescuing individuals trapped in the aftermath of the earthquakes. The team departed from RAF Brize Norton aboard a Voyager aircraft, equipped with advanced drones designed to safely assess structural damages, identify hazards like compromised roofs, and direct ground rescue efforts.

Alongside the search and rescue specialists, the flight includes members of the UK humanitarian field team, comprising supply chain, humanitarian, and security experts, who will also provide support in the region. Additional personnel will join the team in Venezuela to enhance the coordination and delivery of UK aid.

Government Response and Support

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences to the Venezuelan people, particularly those who have suffered the loss of loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to stand in solidarity with those affected, highlighting the urgency of the humanitarian response. The Prime Minister stated, “We are making £2 million of emergency humanitarian funding available and are working closely with international partners to ensure vital support reaches those most in need as quickly as possible.”

The UK ISAR team, which comprises experienced firefighters and specialists from 14 Fire and Rescue Services, is led by the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. The team has recently demonstrated its capabilities in previous operations in Türkiye and Morocco, where it played a critical role in rescuing survivors trapped under rubble.

Collaboration with International Partners

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasised the UK’s commitment to providing timely assistance to Venezuela. She noted, “Our specialist search and rescue teams are deploying to help save lives, and we are providing a £2 million package to support the humanitarian response.” The UK is working closely with international partners to ensure that aid reaches those affected without delay.

The funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) ensures that the UK ISAR team is well-trained, adequately equipped, and prepared for rapid deployment in response to natural disasters. This initiative not only focuses on rescuing trapped individuals but also on coordinating ground efforts and strengthening the broader international response.

Emergency Medical Team Assessment

In addition to the search and rescue operations, experts from the UK’s Emergency Medical Team (UK EMT) are travelling to Venezuela to evaluate urgent health needs. This assessment will inform any subsequent medical support provided by the UK and will enhance international coordination in the healthcare response.

Minister for the Armed Forces, Louise Sandher-Jones MP, highlighted the swift actions of the Armed Forces in facilitating the humanitarian response, stating, “The RAF plays an important role in getting people and capabilities where they are needed most, and our Armed Forces stand ready to support humanitarian missions around the world alongside our international partners.”

Global Humanitarian Contributions

The UK’s £2 million funding package aims to support immediate life-saving activities while also contributing to the international humanitarian response. The UK has a history of partnership in rapidly responding to humanitarian disasters and is a significant contributor to global emergency funds such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). These funds are vital for facilitating rapid multinational responses.

In particular, DREF has allocated resources to the Venezuelan Red Cross to ensure a prompt and effective local response, while CERF has also made provisions for immediate humanitarian assistance aimed at addressing the most pressing needs of those affected by the earthquakes.

The UK International Search and Rescue team (UK ISAR) operates under the auspices of the FCDO and is a collaboration between the FCDO and UK Fire and Rescue Services, providing a 24/7 deployable search and rescue capability for international emergencies. This deployment is led by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, comprising specialists and firefighters from across 14 UK Fire and Rescue Services.
