UK Pledges Support for Destruction of Assad-Era Chemical Weapons to Foster a Stable and Sovereign Syria, Says UN Security Council Statement

Last week marked a significant advancement in Syria’s adherence to international obligations, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reaching a consensus to close Syria’s prolonged safeguards file. This decision follows fifteen years of resistance from the Assad regime and serves as a crucial indicator of Syria’s commitment to fulfilling its international duties.

The United Kingdom also recognises and commends Syria’s proactive engagement with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). We stand prepared to assist in the complete and verified dismantling of chemical weapons from the Assad era, alongside the full implementation of Syria’s responsibilities under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Reconciliation and Accountability as Foundations for Stability

However, it is clear that enduring stability cannot be achieved through security measures alone. It is vital that such stability is reinforced by initiatives focused on reconciliation, accountability, and protection for all communities within Syria. We continue to express concern regarding reports of persistent violence in Northeast Syria and advocate for a unified and inclusive approach to governance.

We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint, refrain from incendiary rhetoric, and collaborate to address the unresolved matters tied to the integration agreement. Ultimately, ensuring that every Syrian feels secure, represented, and safeguarded is fundamental to the nation’s path towards lasting stability and recovery.

Financial Commitment to Support Recovery Efforts

To assist in the recovery initiatives of the Syrian government and address the needs of displaced and vulnerable populations, the United Kingdom is committed to contributing $90 million this year. Nevertheless, it is important to note that Syria’s recovery remains a delicate process.

Actions undertaken by Israel pose risks of heightening tensions at an already precarious time, particularly following Prime Minister Netanyahu’s recent visit to the summit of Mount Hermon within the UN Area of Separation. We continue to call upon all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that may trigger further escalation.

Encouraging Dialogue for Sustainable Solutions

Moreover, we urge Israel to outline a timeline for withdrawing from territories recently occupied in Syria. Dialogue remains the only viable path forward, and we encourage ongoing engagement between Syria and Israel. Efforts to resolve differences through negotiation rather than confrontation are essential.
