UK Military Transport Aircraft Availability Soars by 30% with New Agreement

A £190 million contract extension has been secured with Airbus to provide ongoing support for the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) A400M Atlas fleet, which will help sustain over 350 jobs across the UK. This agreement is set to enhance Britain’s air defence capabilities significantly.

Enhancing Operational Readiness

The contract extension promises a 30% improvement in the availability of the RAF’s tactical and strategic airlift capabilities. By the end of 2027, the number of fully mission-capable A400M aircraft available each day is expected to increase from 10 to 13. This enhancement is crucial for the RAF, enabling it to fulfil its operational commitments more effectively.

Airbus will continue to provide maintenance, repair, and support services for the A400M fleet from its UK Support Centre located at RAF Brize Norton. This initiative not only aims to boost operational capacity but also reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening the UK’s defence industrial base.

Commitment to UK Jobs and Engineering

Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, expressed that this contract extension is a testament to British engineering and the workforce at Brize Norton and Carterton, who are essential in keeping the A400M fleet operational. He highlighted that increasing the availability of these aircraft enhances the RAF’s capacity for global operations and solidifies commitments to NATO allies, while simultaneously ensuring value for taxpayers.

The A400M Atlas plays a pivotal role in the UK’s air mobility operations, supporting various missions, from humanitarian assistance to rapid troop deployment. The continued support from RAF Brize Norton guarantees that the fleet will remain ready to respond to any operational demands without disruption.

Strengthening Partnerships for Future Readiness

Air Commodore Si Young, Head of Air Mobility in National Armaments Materiel, stated that the contract will continue to improve the availability of the A400M fleet, building on previous successes. He emphasised the importance of this platform for the RAF’s operations and its future capabilities.

Furthermore, the 31-month extension to the Medium-Term Contract will ensure that support services remain in place until April 2029, sustaining over 240 Airbus staff and 110 primary subcontract personnel. This collaborative effort is a reflection of the strong partnership between Airbus and the Ministry of Defence.

Investment in Defence and Economic Renewal

Kata Escott, Managing Director of Airbus Defence and Space UK, articulated pride in being a trusted partner to the Ministry of Defence. She noted that the A400M Atlas serves as the backbone of air mobility and that Airbus’s skilled teams are dedicated to enhancing operational readiness in collaboration with RAF personnel.

This contract extension aligns with the broader Defence Investment Plan, which allocates £298 billion to UK defence over the next four years. This strategy aims to ensure sustained investment in British industry, reinforcing the defence sector as a fundamental component of the nation’s economic revitalisation.
