UK Intensifies Humanitarian Aid for At-Risk Civilians in Yemen Amid Houthi Escalation

Tens of thousands of civilians in areas controlled by the Government of Yemen, who have been displaced due to escalating violence from the Houthis, are set to receive crucial support from a new funding initiative announced today. This funding comes in response to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Yemen.

The £10 million package, delivered through the UN’s emergency appeal for Yemen, aims to ensure access to vital nutrition for children and food supplies, along with emergency healthcare services specifically for women and children, as well as vaccines to protect against life-threatening diseases.

Recent estimates indicate that over 130,000 Yemenis have been forced to flee their homes in light of the recent surge in conflict, which has seen more than two weeks of intensified Houthi aggression exacerbating the plight of the most vulnerable populations. The UK government is taking action to address this urgent situation.

Government Response to Escalating Conflict

Stephen Doughty, the Minister for the Middle East, expressed grave concerns over the Houthis’ decision to escalate the conflict, highlighting its devastating effects. He noted that this escalation undermines regional stability and has already resulted in civilian casualties.

“The humanitarian situation unfolding is catastrophic, with many people displaced,” Doughty stated. “Today’s support package will deliver essential access to food, healthcare, and nutritional assistance for the most vulnerable Yemenis affected by this recent escalation.”

He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to collaborating with the Government of Yemen, humanitarian partners, and international allies to safeguard civilians, facilitate humanitarian operations, and revive a political dialogue. Doughty’s stance is unequivocal: “The Houthis must cease their attacks and urgently engage in a UN-negotiated process.”

Diplomatic Engagements and International Support

During his recent visit to the UN General Assembly, Doughty spoke with Yemeni Prime Minister and met with Dr Abdullah Al-Alimi Bawazeer, Vice President of the Presidential Leadership Council. He reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Yemen’s internationally recognised government and emphasised the necessity of sustained international assistance for those affected by the ongoing conflict.

The UK government has condemned the Houthis’ resumption of hostilities after years of attempts to achieve progress through dialogue. It has been clear that the Houthis must immediately cease their attacks and facilitate safe, unhindered humanitarian access.

In addition to providing humanitarian aid, the UK is actively coordinating efforts to bolster regional stability, working closely with international partners to formulate a robust political response. This includes a joint call with Bahrain for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in light of the recent Houthi escalation, which was raised at the UNSC.

Details of Humanitarian Assistance

The £10 million allocation forms part of a larger £104 million Official Development Assistance (ODA) package for Yemen announced in June 2026. This funding, pledged to the UN’s flash appeal for Yemen, will be distributed through various partners on the ground, including the World Food Programme (£5.5 million), the International Organisation for Migration (£1 million), and UNICEF (£3.5 million).

This funding will enable the UN to meet the life-saving needs of those most affected by the conflict, including providing nutritional support to 30,000 children, emergency healthcare access to 35,000 women and children, and vaccinations for 10,000 children.
