UK and Lebanon Forge New Security Cooperation Agreement Through MOU

The United Kingdom has formalised its commitment to Lebanon’s security framework by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities as well as the Ministry of Defence. This agreement underscores the UK’s enduring partnership with Lebanon’s security institutions.

Supporting Internal Security Initiatives

Through the UK’s Integrated Security Fund, a comprehensive Internal Security Assistance Programme is set to be implemented over a period of 31 months, providing financial support amounting to £16.3 million for the Internal Security Forces (ISF) and the Lebanese Army.

This collaboration aims to bolster security, enhance stability, and reinforce state authority in Lebanon. By focusing on institutional resilience, the partnership is designed to enable effective and accountable responses to both current and emerging security challenges. These challenges encompass various issues, including counter-terrorism efforts and the mitigation of criminal violence.

Commitment to Professionalism and Accountability

British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, expressed the UK’s pride in standing with Lebanon and its security entities. He remarked that this Memorandum of Understanding signifies a mutual dedication to fostering a more secure, stable, and resilient Lebanon. The UK remains committed to supporting professional state institutions, such as the Lebanese Army and ISF, which play a crucial role in serving and protecting the Lebanese populace.

The United Kingdom has maintained a close partnership with the Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces since 2009, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to enhancing Lebanon’s security landscape.
