UK Addresses Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on Myanmar at UN Human Rights Council

Thank you, Mr Vice President.

The reports we have received highlight a deteriorating crisis that is severely impacting the human rights of communities throughout Myanmar. Airstrikes continue to be the predominant cause of civilian fatalities, indiscriminately targeting schools, hospitals, and places of worship. The military’s tactics, which include forced conscription, arson, and arbitrary detention, have resulted in the displacement of over 3.6 million individuals. The findings of the Mechanism, which reveal instances of sexualised torture within military detention facilities—including the abuse of children—are profoundly alarming.

Concerns over Minority Rights Violations

We express our grave concerns regarding the violations faced by ethnic and religious minorities across the nation. These include forced labour, compulsory recruitment, and the loss of land and homes. The situation remains dire, with many communities experiencing relentless persecution and suffering.

The United Kingdom is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring accountability for all citizens of Myanmar. We have made a financial contribution of £900,000 to support the Mechanism and have actively engaged in international efforts to gather and safeguard evidence pertaining to the most serious crimes committed in the country. Our collaborative intervention at the International Court of Justice is also a testament to our dedication, and we now await the Court’s judgement.

Call for Accountability

High Commissioner, Mr Vice President, it is imperative that those responsible for the documented violations are held accountable. The international community must unite to address these injustices and work towards restoring human rights and dignity for all individuals in Myanmar.

Thank you.
