Taoiseach of Ireland Makes History as First International Leader to Visit No10 North

Leaders from the UK and Ireland are set to engage in discussions aimed at enhancing their bilateral relationship, focusing on common goals such as trade enhancement, security collaboration, and cooperative efforts with the European Union. The Prime Minister of the UK will welcome the Taoiseach of Ireland, Micheál Martin, in Manchester today, marking the first occasion that an international leader has visited No10 North. This meeting represents a pivotal moment, coming shortly after the Prime Minister hosted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Liverpool and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Oxford. The Prime Minister is keen to draw attention to various towns across the nation as part of this wider engagement.

During their inaugural official meeting since the Prime Minister assumed office, the two leaders will explore avenues for deeper collaboration between the UK and Ireland, with an emphasis on creating opportunities for citizens in both countries. The agenda will likely include discussions on boosting trade, supporting Ukraine, and working alongside the European Union, particularly as Ireland continues its presidency of the EU.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the meeting, Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated, “I’m delighted to be hosting the Taoiseach as the first international leader to visit No10 North – this is a historic moment and a proud day for Manchester.” He emphasised that No10 North is dedicated to fostering opportunities for working individuals and highlighted the importance of the partnership with Ireland in improving the lives of people in both nations.

Currently, Ireland ranks as the UK’s sixth-largest trading partner, while the route between Dublin and London is recognised as the busiest intra-European air corridor. These facts highlight the tangible, everyday advantages that the UK-Ireland relationship offers to individuals in both countries.
