Sydenham Café Owners Left Heartbroken After Devastating Blaze Wipes Out Their Business

The owners of a beloved café in South East London, devastated by a recent fire that significantly damaged their establishment, have recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing their hard work engulfed in flames. Kýnd, located in Sydenham, quickly became a local favourite since its opening in January 2025, but on Sunday, August 2, a fire erupted in Newlands Park, necessitating the response of ten fire engines and approximately seventy firefighters to bring the blaze under control. The London Fire Brigade has indicated that the fire was likely accidental, stemming from the improper use of smoking materials.

The blaze caused extensive damage, affecting part of the ground floor and half of the first floor of a nearby flat, as well as a ground-floor shop and the flat above it. An outbuilding and a shed were also lost in the fire. Tatiana and Elena, the co-owners of Kýnd, were preparing to close the café when they first detected the smell of smoke around 2 pm. Initially believing their neighbours were simply barbecuing, they soon noticed the smoke thickening.

A Desperate Attempt to Control the Flames

Upon venturing into the garden, they were confronted with flames leaping along the fence. Although Elena attempted to use a fire extinguisher, Tatiana quickly realised the fire’s intensity was beyond their control. “I told her there was nothing we could do, so we evacuated all the staff inside,” Tatiana recounted. Within moments, the fire brigade arrived, bravely tackling the inferno that had rendered the café enveloped in smoke. “We had to inform them that the gas was still on and needed to be switched off,” Tatiana explained.

Elena, unable to remain outside, found a small gap between the buildings that allowed her to see the devastation unfold. “It was heartbreaking,” she said. “I felt completely empty inside; Elena was in tears. We watched everything we had built go up in flames in mere minutes.” The duo had initially envisioned Kýnd as a healthy coffee shop that would serve their community, inspired by their previous experience in a bakery. After months of hard work and saving, they secured a location in Newlands Park, which matched their vision of a welcoming, dog-friendly environment surrounded by residential homes.

Community Support in Times of Crisis

With the café’s back and garden completely destroyed, alongside the damage to three surrounding flats, Tatiana and Elena now face the daunting task of rebuilding. They are currently awaiting updates from their insurers regarding the commencement of repair work. In the meantime, their sisters initiated a fundraiser, which has already garnered £9,000, showcasing the tremendous support from the community during this challenging time. “We were overwhelmed and trying to figure out our next steps when my sister proposed the GoFundMe,” Tatiana shared.

The response has been heartening, with many local individuals and businesses rallying to offer assistance. “We’ve received so much love, and the community has stood by us since the beginning. These are everyday people contributing, and we are grateful for their support,” she said. Other cafés have also reached out with offers of help, including hosting free events, further motivating Tatiana and Elena to reopen as soon as possible. “We still have VAT and payroll obligations, and since we are currently closed, the funds from the GoFundMe will be crucial for our survival,” Tatiana noted. The duo expressed their hope that insurance claims would allow them to maintain their staff, whom they regard as family.

Looking Forward Amidst Challenges

Fortunately, the front section of the café sustained less damage, and they are optimistic about operating on a limited basis while renovations are carried out at the back. However, the situation remains uncertain as firefighters were still monitoring the premises for any signs of smouldering when visited. The London Fire Brigade has reiterated its warning about the importance of properly extinguishing cigarettes before disposal to prevent future incidents.
