Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Reaches Unprecedented Levels
In 2025, the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) hit a staggering 425.6±0.1 parts per million, a figure that represents a 53% increase from pre-industrial levels of approximately 278 ppm. This year marked not only the highest CO₂ readings ever recorded but also an all-time high for fossil fuel emissions, estimated at 10.3±0.5 petagrams of carbon per annum. This figure is more than three times the emissions of the 1960s, illustrating the dramatic rise in greenhouse gas emissions associated with industrial activities.

This trend was particularly pronounced in the northern hemisphere, where regions above 55°N experienced severe drying conditions. The lack of soil moisture adversely affects vegetation growth and can exacerbate extreme weather events, including heatwaves and wildfires.

The period from 2023 to 2025 has been documented as the three hottest years on record, with January 2025 being the warmest January ever recorded. Most months during this timeframe, with the exception of December, ranked among the top three warmest, underscoring the persistent upward trend in global temperatures.
