Surge in Cyclospora Infections Associated with Travel to Mexico

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released new figures indicating a significant increase in cyclospora infections among travellers returning from Mexico. This rise in cases has prompted the agency to issue guidance urging all holidaymakers to take necessary precautions while abroad, particularly regarding food and water hygiene, to mitigate the risk of infection.

Understanding Cyclospora and Its Symptoms

Cyclospora is a parasite that can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress, manifesting primarily as explosive diarrhoea. Common sources of infection include contaminated food items, particularly herbs, salads, and soft fruits. The infection is contracted through the consumption of such contaminated food and is not naturally found in the UK, meaning there is no risk of person-to-person transmission.

Symptoms of a cyclospora infection can vary but typically include frequent watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, flatulence, a low-grade fever, loss of appetite, and weight loss. While cyclosporiasis often presents as a mild illness, with most individuals recovering within a few days without treatment, those who are immunocompromised may experience more serious or prolonged symptoms and may require antibiotics for effective treatment.

Recent Surge in Reported Cases

The most recent data reveals that between 30 April and 15 July 2026, a total of 67 cases of cyclospora infection have been reported among travellers in England (30 cases), Wales (10 cases), and Scotland (27 cases). This figure represents a notable increase compared to the annual average of 93 cases documented from 2022 to 2025.

Of the 67 reported cases, travel information is available for 52, with 48 individuals having visited Mexico, one having travelled to the USA, and another reporting travel to both the USA and Kenya. Those who travelled to Mexico indicated they had stayed at various hotels in the Riviera Maya and Cancún regions, consuming a diverse selection of food and drink as part of their all-inclusive holiday packages. Investigations into these cases are currently underway.

Anticipating Further Increases in Cases

Given the rise in travel activity during the summer months, UKHSA expects to see a continued increase in travel-associated cases, particularly those linked to trips to Mexico. Additionally, there is concern regarding a potential rise in cases related to travel to the USA, where a widespread outbreak has been documented.

Dr Philip Veal, a Consultant in Travel Health at UKHSA, commented on the situation: “We have recently detected a rise in cyclospora infections among travellers returning from Mexico. These infections are caused by a parasite and can affect the stomach and intestines.”

Preventative Measures for Travellers

Dr Veal emphasised the importance of adhering to good food and water hygiene practices for those travelling to Mexico and other regions where cyclospora is prevalent. Recommended measures include drinking bottled water, ensuring food is thoroughly cooked, and avoiding certain items such as fresh uncooked berries, herbs, unpeeled fruits, and salad.

Travellers experiencing symptoms upon their return, such as watery diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms, are advised to seek medical attention promptly. It is crucial to inform healthcare professionals about any recent travel history.

Collaboration and Resources for Safe Travel

To address the growing concern of cyclospora infections, UKHSA is collaborating with the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and Mexican public health authorities to further investigate the rise in cases. The agency is also working alongside the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) to ensure that appropriate travel advice is available for UK citizens.
