Six Arrests Made Following Immigration Operation at Evri in Croydon

In South London, six employees of the delivery firm Evri have been apprehended following a significant immigration operation. The Home Office confirmed that this initiative aims to combat illegal employment practices within the delivery industry. On 9th July, enforcement officers conducted a visit to Evri’s facility in Croydon, where they detained three Brazilian nationals, two Pakistani nationals, and one Indian national for various immigration violations.

The individuals have since been placed on immigration bail, which comes with stringent conditions, while further investigations are underway. In conjunction with the Croydon operation, the Home Office also targeted two additional Evri delivery centres located in Redditch, Worcestershire, and Crawley, West Sussex. During these raids, a total of four more individuals were arrested: one Pakistani national in Redditch, and a Gambian national, a Ghanaian national, and another Pakistani national in Crawley, all for overstaying their visas.

Government Actions and Employer Responsibilities

The Government has indicated its intention to expedite the removal of these individuals from the United Kingdom. Additionally, the Home Office has warned that the employer could face significant penalties, potentially amounting to £60,000 per illegal worker, if it is determined that they employed individuals without conducting the necessary pre-employment checks.

It is reportedly common practice within the delivery sector to engage subcontractors for recruitment purposes, which may complicate compliance with immigration regulations. Eddy Montgomery, the director of enforcement, compliance, and crime at the Home Office, expressed gratitude to his officers who conduct such operations nationwide. He stated, “We are committed to working closely with companies to ensure they are compliant. However, we will never hesitate to take enforcement action to crack down on those who flout the law.”

Evri’s Commitment to Compliance

An Evri spokesperson responded by emphasising the company’s serious approach to its employment obligations, confirming that right-to-work checks are conducted for all employees. The spokesperson reiterated the company’s commitment to fully and constructively cooperate with the Home Office during their investigations.
