Significant Update Following Walthamstow Fire’s Spread to Gardens and Railway Embankment

Over 100 firefighters successfully managed to control a significant blaze in Walthamstow, which engulfed homes, gardens, and a railway embankment on Sunday evening, July 12. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) dispatched 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines to the scene near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street at approximately 6 pm.

The fire initially ignited in one residential property, while a second house sustained damage to its rear extension. The flames spread to the gardens of around 30 adjacent properties before crews were able to prevent further encroachment into the community. The blaze also affected a railway embankment, necessitating a partial closure of the Weaver London Overground line, which led to significant disruption for commuters.

Firefighters Commended for Their Efforts

LFB Assistant Commissioner Tom Goodall, who was on-site during the incident, commended the firefighters for their swift response and tireless efforts in controlling the fire. He remarked, “This was a significant incident affecting the community this evening. We deployed a considerable amount of resources to this fire, and firefighters worked in hot and arduous conditions to bring it under control as swiftly as possible.”

Goodall further detailed the situation, noting, “One house was alight, and a second home has suffered damage to a rear extension. The gardens of around 30 properties have also unfortunately been affected by the fire. However, crews worked extremely hard to prevent the fire from spreading to further homes.” Additionally, he confirmed that the railway embankment was ablaze, complicating transport services. Collaborative efforts with Transport for London and the British Transport Police were implemented to assist stranded passengers, all of whom have since disembarked from the affected trains.

Ongoing Safety Measures and Community Support

After hours of dedicated work, firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control, and Goodall indicated that the Brigade would maintain a strong presence on-site throughout the night to ensure the complete extinguishment of the fire. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the incident. Two rest centres were established for evacuated residents, although it is anticipated that most individuals will be able to return to their homes by nightfall.

During the height of the fire, thick smoke blanketed the area, prompting authorities to advise residents to keep windows and doors closed. This advisory has since been lifted, though motorists are still encouraged to avoid Wood Street, Shernhall Street, and surrounding roads due to ongoing closures. Earlier that evening, the LFB had confirmed that several gardens and outbuildings near the railway line had been engulfed in flames, leading to more than 100 emergency calls being placed. Fire crews from Tottenham, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow, Chingford, and nearby fire stations were deployed rapidly to combat the situation.

Investigation Underway

Local MP Stella Creasy provided updates on the incident, stating that there had been “an electrical fire on the train lines.” She characterised the event as a “major incident in Wood Street,” highlighting the seriousness of the fire and the extensive evacuations that took place. The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation, as authorities seek to establish the circumstances surrounding this disruptive event.
