In an ambitious initiative aimed at empowering young people across the UK, Sainsbury’s has announced the launch of its “Modern Work Experience Programme”. The initiative is set to provide approximately 10,000 work experience and skills opportunities that will enable young individuals to gain vital workplace exposure, build confidence, and develop essential skills for future employment. This programme is particularly focused on aiding those from communities facing significant barriers to entering the workforce.
Targeting Communities in Need
Commencing in October, the programme will specifically target schools that exhibit a high uptake of free school meals, as well as communities where youth unemployment rates are notably high. The initiative follows recent educational reforms introduced by the Prime Minister, aimed at bridging the gap between academic education and the employment sector. These reforms include the introduction of new technical education routes for 14-year-olds, granting them early access to workplace skills and connections with local employers.
The government has expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that technical education is valued equally alongside traditional academic pathways, thus providing young people with clear routes into employment without encountering ‘dead ends’ in their education. In light of the alarming statistic that over one million young people aged 16 to 24 are currently not engaged in education, employment, or training—approximately one in eight—the Prime Minister has prioritised tackling youth unemployment as a national concern.
Addressing Barriers to Employment
Simon Roberts, Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, emphasised the importance of offering meaningful work experience to young individuals, reflecting on his own journey into the workforce at the age of 16. He noted that many young people today are unable to secure such opportunities due to a lack of connections or networks. The new programme seeks to dismantle these barriers, helping young people from diverse backgrounds gain the skills and confidence necessary to embark on their careers.
The programme will include a variety of activities such as workplace visits, career sessions, and practical work experiences, covering essential skills like CV writing and interview techniques. It aims to provide insights into various career paths within retail, logistics, food, technology, and business. Importantly, schools across the UK are encouraged to participate in the programme, with outreach efforts commencing in September.
Collaborative Efforts for Greater Impact
Sainsbury’s plans to collaborate with The Careers & Enterprise Company and other industry partners to refine and expand the model of work experience opportunities available to young people. This collaborative approach is designed to ensure that the programme not only meets the needs of participants but can also be extended to more stores and communities in the future.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, highlighted the significance of work experience as a crucial first step into the workforce for young individuals. He reiterated the importance of making these opportunities accessible to all, irrespective of their background. In his view, initiatives like Sainsbury’s are essential for breaking down the barriers to employment and nurturing the skills required to succeed.
A Comprehensive Approach to Youth Employment
The announcement of this initiative marks a significant commitment from one of the UK’s largest employers, following the Prime Minister’s recent educational reforms aimed at enhancing opportunities for young people. It aligns with broader efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for youth entering the job market.
With the KickStarter programme, Sainsbury’s intends to blend in-school learning with practical work experience, tailored to different age groups. Younger students will benefit from an introduction to the workplace while older participants will receive targeted support in employability skills, ensuring they are adequately prepared for the challenges of the job market.
The programme is set to commence its marketing efforts in September, with schools encouraged to sign up for the KickStarter Explore programme. Interested parties can find more information by contacting Sainsbury’s directly, as the first events are scheduled to take place in October.
