In the heart of the English countryside, some of the nation’s most exquisite rivers flow quietly, often unnoticed. Among these, chalk streams stand out as some of the rarest freshwater habitats on the planet, with approximately 85% of the world’s 280 chalk streams located in England.
These rivers are celebrated for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. However, many have suffered extensive modifications over the years, becoming disconnected from their natural processes and struggling to maintain healthy ecosystems.
Restoration Efforts at the River Rib
This summer, a significant restoration initiative was undertaken on a one-kilometre stretch of the River Rib at Latchford, near Standon in Hertfordshire, in collaboration with the Wild Trout Trust, Affinity Water, and local landowner Jeffrey Pearman. The aim was to help revert this precious chalk stream to a more natural state.
Like many rivers in England, the River Rib has been altered over decades due to dredging, straightening, and agricultural practices nearby. These alterations deepened the riverbed, eliminated vital gravel habitats, and severed the connection between the river and its floodplain. Consequently, the natural processes that once promoted a diverse and healthy river environment were lost, leading to a ‘moderate’ ecological condition under the 2025 Water Framework Directive classification.
Innovative Approaches to River Restoration
What set this project apart was the opportunity to expand beyond the limitations of the existing river channel. Landowner Jeffrey Pearman generously dedicated additional land for the project, which enabled the creation of approximately 300 metres of ‘re-wiggled’ river channel, reconnecting the river to its broader floodplain.
This innovative strategy grants the river the freedom to navigate the landscape naturally, allowing it to adapt to varying flow conditions, while simultaneously fostering valuable habitats for wildlife. This restoration approach aligns with the principles of the Chalk Stream Restoration Strategy, which advocates for the reinstatement of natural river processes and the reconnection of rivers to their floodplains, thereby enhancing the long-term health and resilience of chalk stream catchments.
Rob Mungovan, Project Manager at the Wild Trout Trust, emphasised, “Chalk streams are incredibly special habitats, and projects like this aim to provide rivers with the space and natural features they need to function effectively. Jeff’s ambition as a landowner allowed us to extend our vision here. Rather than being restricted by the existing channel, we could develop a much more ambitious plan for the River Rib and its dependent wildlife.”
Key Features of the Restoration Project
The restoration works, delivered by Aquamaintain and overseen by the Wild Trout Trust, received support from the Environment Agency and Affinity Water. The project encompassed:
- The creation of approximately 300 metres of new channel.
- The restoration of one kilometre of chalk stream habitat.
- The reconnection of the river to its floodplain.
- The establishment of wetland scrapes, a backwater, and shallow ponds.
- Bank regrading and habitat enhancement efforts.
- The installation of natural wood features to diversify flows and habitats.
- The introduction of significant quantities of gravel to enhance spawning habitats and restore characteristic chalk stream features.
During excavation, an unexpected yet beneficial discovery of substantial gravel quantities was made. Some of this material was processed and reused on-site, aiding in the recreation of the riverbed conditions crucial for native chalk stream species.
Ecological Benefits of the Restoration
Healthy chalk streams sustain a remarkable diversity of plants and animals. The restoration is set to enhance habitats for fish species like brown trout, while also benefiting aquatic plants, invertebrates, and a range of wetland wildlife. The development of new wetland habitats and improved connectivity with the floodplain is anticipated to provide fresh opportunities for species such as water voles, otters, wading birds, and various insects.
By reinstating natural river processes, the project not only improves conditions within the river channel but also aids in recovering ecological connections across the wider landscape.
The Role of Collaboration in Environmental Restoration
Such ambitious projects can only succeed with robust partnerships. Funding was provided by the Environment Agency through the Chalk Partnership Fund and the Water Environment Improvement Fund. The Wild Trout Trust led the project’s development and implementation, while Affinity Water contributed support and funding through its River Restoration programme, which aligns with its broader environmental commitments to protect chalk stream catchments, enhance biodiversity, and improve water quality. The project’s success also hinged on the enthusiasm and involvement of the landowner, who not only made his land available for the restoration works but also supported Aquamaintain throughout the implementation phase.

By creating more space for the River Rib and restoring its natural features, we contribute to a healthier environment for wildlife and support the ongoing efforts necessary to protect these vital habitats for the future.”
A Vision for the Future
While construction has now concluded, the restoration narrative of the River Rib is just beginning. Plans for extensive seeding and tree planting aim to transform the currently exposed riverbanks, with wetter weather expected to facilitate vegetation establishment and bank stabilization, alongside continuous monitoring to assess the river’s response over time. This site is also anticipated to provide valuable insights for future chalk stream restoration projects across Hertfordshire and beyond.
Our goal is for the River Rib to serve as a model for how embracing natural processes can restore England’s globally rare chalk streams, enhance resilience to climate change, and create thriving environments for both people and wildlife. This project aligns with the Environment Agency’s EA2030 ambitions for healthy air, land, and water that support nature’s recovery, fostering a nation more resilient to climate change. By allowing the river to breathe once more, we are contributing to a healthier future for this unique ecosystem.
