Overview of Risks in July
Throughout July, the risk level to UK interests remained consistent, marked by an increase in uncontrolled re-entries, fragmentation events, and heightened space weather activity. Notably, however, there were fewer collision alerts compared to June.
The National Space Operations Centre (NSpOC) maintained full operational capability for all warning and protection services during this period.
Analysis of Re-entries
In July, NSpOC observed a 17% rise in the number of objects re-entering Earth’s atmosphere compared to the previous month. A total of 62 objects were recorded, which included 59 satellites, two rocket bodies, and one likely piece of debris.
For context, the monthly re-entry figures are as follows: August recorded 34, September 39, October 54, November 43, December 52, January 50, February 66, March 72, April 68, May 48, June 53, and July 62.
Collision Risk Assessment
The risk of collision for UK-licensed satellites decreased by 16% in July relative to June, and this figure fell below the rolling 12-month average. The data indicates that there were 1,209 collision alerts in July, in contrast to 1,436 in June.
The numbers for previous months include: August with 971, September 1,537, October 2,402, November 2,472, December 2,643, January 2,608, February 2,117, March 1,847, April 1,194, and May 1,285.
Growth of Registered Space Objects
The population of in-orbit objects saw an increase in July, with 322 new additions to the US Satellite Catalogue. The total number of Registered Space Objects (RSOs) now stands at 34,751.
For comparison, the monthly totals are as follows: August 31,389, September 31,677, October 31,968, November 32,351, December 32,739, January 32,965, February 33,205, March 33,593, April 33,873, May 34,138, June 34,429, and July 34,751.
It is important to note that the reported number of RSOs may be subject to minor adjustments over time as tracking methodologies improve. The figures presented herein reflect the most accurate data available and may differ slightly from previous reports.
Fragmentation Events
July witnessed two fragmentation incidents involving payloads situated in Lower Earth and Graveyard orbits. Ongoing assessments aim to determine the quantity of debris released into orbit as a result of these events.
