New Safety Flyer and Report on Argos Georgia Released

Today marks the release of our comprehensive investigation report regarding the tragic sinking of the St Helena-registered fishing vessel Argos Georgia, which occurred on 22 July 2024 and resulted in the heartbreaking loss of 13 lives.

Insights from the Chief Inspector

Rob Loder, the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, commented on the incident, stating, “This was a tragic accident resulting in the loss of 13 lives. Fishing in the remotest and most hostile parts of our oceans requires strict adherence to the maintenance of a vessel’s watertight integrity. Should a problem arise, a quick, clear and efficient emergency plan should be executed. Training and safety drills provide the best chance of survival in such extreme circumstances.”

The report offers a detailed account of the events leading up to the accident, the actions taken in its aftermath, and a series of recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.

Additional Resources for the Fishing Industry

In conjunction with the report, a safety flyer has been developed specifically for the fishing industry, aimed at enhancing awareness and implementing safety measures based on the findings of the investigation.

This inquiry was conducted by the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) on behalf of the St Helena Government, in line with the Category 2 Red Ensign Group Memorandum of Understanding.
