MMO Focuses on Enhancing Statistical Processes
The recent decision enables the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to concentrate on refining its statistical processes, methodologies, and data quality. The ongoing publication of statistics will continue to serve as a vital resource for understanding sea fisheries activity in the United Kingdom.
The MMO is dedicated to regaining its status as an accredited provider of official statistics. To this end, the organisation plans to collaborate closely with the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) as it implements necessary improvements, with the objective of pursuing reaccreditation in the future.
Commitment to Statistical Standards
Rebekah Paul, Head of Statistics and Analysis at the MMO, highlighted the importance of adhering to the Code of Practice for Statistics, which outlines the standards that official statistics must fulfil in terms of trustworthiness, quality, and value. Following the suspension of its accredited status in 2024, the MMO has initiated a series of enhancements to its Sea Fisheries Statistics. These improvements include better data quality for under-10 metre vessels, updates to the presentation of trade statistics, and advancements in user access to statistical releases.
Despite these steps forward, Paul acknowledged that additional efforts are necessary to fully align with the standards set by the Code of Practice. Key areas identified for further development include refining the methodology for calculating average prices, enhancing the fishers’ survey, and establishing a robust disclosure control policy.
Development Plan for Future Improvements
The MMO remains resolute in its commitment to advancing its statistical capabilities and reinstating its accredited official statistics status. To this end, the organisation has unveiled an ambitious development plan that outlines its priorities for the upcoming year, detailing the actions that will be taken to address these critical areas. The MMO aims to seek reaccreditation for the Sea Fisheries Statistics at the earliest opportunity.
