Met Police Officer Charged with Rape Following New Year’s Eve Celebration

A police officer who raped a woman following a New Year’s Eve celebration has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Rupert Edwards, 33, was a member of the Metropolitan Police at the time of the incident, which took place at the victim’s home while he was off duty. Prosecutor John Clifford detailed how the woman had been drinking heavily as the midnight hour approached and ultimately fell asleep on her sofa, only to wake up later covered in chocolates that partygoers had attempted to toss into her mouth.

Edwards had learned of the party in London and arrived after the clock struck midnight, shortly after fireworks had been set off. During the proceedings at Southwark Crown Court, it was revealed that the victim had only vague memories of the events that transpired. She recalled a taxi ride with Edwards and found it peculiar that he did not exit the vehicle before her. The court heard that Edwards had diverted an Uber ride to his residence before heading to the victim’s location instead. The next thing she remembered was waking up in her bed next to Edwards, both of them naked. At that moment, Edwards made an inappropriate comment regarding their sexual encounter, which left the victim feeling “disgusted” as she had never consented to any sexual activity and would have never agreed to it.

Victim’s Statement and Emotional Aftermath

Following the incident, Edwards sent the victim a text message requesting another sexual encounter. In her victim impact statement, which was read in court, the woman expressed feeling “emotionally numb” in the aftermath of the assault. “I felt emotionally numb, as if there was a black spot over everything,” she conveyed, adding, “While I was not suicidal, I often found the notion of not waking up the next day appealing.” She further stated, “A conviction does not bring me closure. I will continue to live with the effects of what he has done.”

The victim reported the attack to the police in October 2023, detailing the events that occurred on New Year’s Day in January 2018. An investigation was initiated, leading to Edwards’ arrest in April 2024, with charges of rape being filed against him the subsequent March. Having served as a police officer for over eight years, Edwards was suspended in 2022. Following a trial, he was found guilty of one count of rape on May 22.

Previous Allegations and Sentencing

It was noted in court that Edwards, who resides in Bexhill, East Sussex, had faced trial previously for the alleged rape of two other women. He was acquitted of one charge in an initial trial, while the second case also resulted in an acquittal after a retrial. During the sentencing, Judge Nicholas Rimmer remarked that the victim had been completely unaware of what had transpired until Edwards revealed the details to her the following morning. He highlighted that the assault occurred in the victim’s home, a place that “ought to have been her sanctuary.”

As the seven-year sentence was handed down, Edwards displayed no reaction. Additionally, he was subject to a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim or approaching any location where she might be present. Timothy Greaves, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, stated: “Rupert Edwards preyed on a woman and took advantage of her. Despite his claims of consent, the evidence clearly demonstrated that it was rape. We acknowledge the challenges associated with reporting such offences and wish to express our gratitude to the victim for her courage in coming forward. I hope today’s sentence offers some solace to all women affected by Edwards’ actions. It is due to their testimonies that he has been brought to justice.”
