London Weather Alert: Brace for a 4-Day Deluge Following Recent Heatwave

London is set to experience a welcome break from the ongoing heatwave next week, with rain expected to grace the city for four consecutive days, according to meteorological forecasts. Light showers and drizzle are anticipated to commence around 4pm on Friday, 17th July, and are likely to persist until at least the evening of Monday, 20th July. The BBC Weather service indicates that while the sun may attempt to peek through the rain clouds intermittently, the overall conditions will be considerably less dry and bright compared to recent weeks.

During this four-day period, temperatures are expected to remain warm, fluctuating around 26 to 27 degrees Celsius, but will drop to a cooler 16 degrees overnight. This shift in weather will provide a much-needed respite as the capital braces itself for yet another week of soaring temperatures. Meteorologists have forecasted a stretch of six consecutive days where temperatures will surpass 30 degrees Celsius, starting from the afternoon of 6th July and continuing until 14th July, when they are predicted to dip below 28 degrees Celsius. This marks the third heatwave of the year, with the previous one recording an unprecedented high of 36.4 degrees Celsius.

Urban Heat Challenges

London has been particularly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, largely due to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, which can make the city feel up to 10 degrees hotter than the actual temperature due to the density of buildings. Nationally, conditions across the UK are expected to be less humid than those experienced in June, with lower peak temperatures and a reduction in exceptionally warm nights, as stated by the Met Office.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates elaborated on the forecasts, noting, “Temperatures this week are not expected to reach the highs we witnessed last month, although certain areas in southern England may experience several days in the low 30s Celsius, with a few locations potentially soaring to 34 or 35 degrees later this week.” He also mentioned that night-time temperatures will not match the extremes of June, although larger urban areas may still remain in the high teens Celsius overnight, particularly towards the end of the week. There is also a possibility of experiencing a tropical night, where temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Widespread Heat Across the UK

The heat will extend beyond London, impacting much of England and Wales, with parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland also feeling the warmth, albeit with peak temperatures more likely to remain in the upper 20s Celsius. As the UV index rises alongside the temperatures, it is imperative for individuals to take necessary precautions when exposed to both the heat and the sun.

Further to this, the Met Office has raised concerns regarding a potential ‘extreme’ Category 4 marine heatwave, as sea-surface temperatures around much of the English and Welsh coastlines, the English Channel, and the central and southern North Sea are currently between 1.5 to 4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. This elevated warmth poses a threat to local wildlife and ecosystems, with limited opportunities for cooling during the ongoing heatwave.
