Heartfelt Tributes Emerge Following the Passing of Former Sutton Councillor Just Days After Being Awarded Freedom of the Borough

A former councillor for Sutton, Marian James, renowned for her exceptional dedication and resilience, has passed away at the age of 71. Just two days prior to her death, she was honoured with the Freedom of the Borough, recognising her extensive contributions to public service. Marian died peacefully at her home on the evening of July 15, surrounded by her family.

A Lasting Tribute from the Council

The Civic Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Muhammad Sadiq, conveyed the news on behalf of the council, reflecting on Marian’s lifelong commitment to the borough and its residents. He expressed, “At the beginning of this week, I had the immense honour of presiding over a special meeting of councillors to award Marian the Freedom of the Borough—the highest civic honour the authority can bestow. During this meeting, we heard from various residents, community groups, local Members of Parliament, and both current and former councillors about Marian’s vital and enduring contribution to our borough’s populace.”

He continued, “On behalf of everyone here at the council and across Sutton, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Marian’s family during this profoundly difficult time.”

A Career of Compassion and Advocacy

Born in Liverpool, Marian later settled in Sutton with her family, dedicating much of her career to assisting the borough’s most vulnerable residents. Before embarking on her political journey, she served as the founding chief executive of Sutton Carers Centre, where she facilitated access to support, employment, and training for carers, establishing services that continue to benefit local families to this day.

In 2014, Marian was elected as the Liberal Democrat councillor for Wallington North and took on the role of Chair of the People Committee in 2018, a position she held until her retirement earlier this year following a cancer diagnosis. Throughout her tenure, she was instrumental in the establishment of London’s first council-run children’s homes and the launch of an award-winning technology-enabled care service aimed at empowering residents to maintain their independence in their own homes for longer.

Championing Social Care and Community Rights

Marian was also a key figure in shaping Sutton’s adult social care services, advocating for the rights of care-experienced individuals. More recently, she played a pivotal role in the council’s decision to recognise “care experienced” individuals as a local protected characteristic. The Freedom of the Borough was awarded to her in recognition of her distinguished public service and steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of Sutton residents, particularly through her work in social care.

Although Marian was unable to attend the Freedom of the Borough ceremony, her friends, colleagues, and supporters filled the council chamber to honour her legacy. During the ceremony, fellow Liberal Democrat and Wallington North councillor Sunita Gordon remarked, “I first met Marian 12 years ago, and it has been a privilege to work alongside her ever since. While we occasionally had differing opinions, what mattered most was the mutual respect and shared purpose between us, often coupled with a good laugh afterwards.”

A Legacy Remembered

Later, Carshalton and Wallington MP Bobby Dean described Marian as being “made of silk and steel”, emphasising her strong convictions and deep care for others. In closing the ceremony, Nick Walsh and Elena Nicola from the Sutton-based social enterprise Nickel Support accepted flowers and the award on Marian’s behalf. “We are incredibly saddened that Marian and her family cannot be here with us this evening because this is her moment,” Nicola stated, prompting appreciative applause from the audience.
