Fulham Osteopaths: More Than Three Decades of Family-Run Osteopathic Care on Fulham Road

Fulham Osteopaths

Fulham Osteopaths has been serving the Fulham community since 1989, when Melinda Cotton founded the clinic that has since become one of London’s well-known and respected osteopathy practices. Located at 769 Fulham Road, a short walk from Parsons Green tube station, it remains a family-run health clinic to this day, led by directors Andrew and Melinda Cotton, senior practitioners with over 37 years of experience each.

The practice describes its purpose simply: osteopathic care to help people live life to their fullest. Its work spans pain and injury, women’s health, cranial osteopathy for babies and a range of other health concerns, delivered in a custom-built, bright and friendly space with full reception services.

That combination of long experience, a family ethos and genuine warmth has made Fulham Osteopaths a trusted part of the neighbourhood for more than 35 years, a place, as the clinic puts it, where people matter.

A General Practice with Specialist Interests

Fulham Osteopaths operates as a general osteopathic practice, treating a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints: back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches, shoulder, hip, knee and foot problems, poor posture and repetitive strain injuries among them. Alongside this, the clinic has developed particular expertise in care for pregnant mothers and babies, as well as the assessment and treatment of headaches and dizziness.

The practice is known for helping people who have not found lasting relief elsewhere. Its approach deliberately goes beyond symptoms to understand the whole story, health history, lifestyle and the underlying patterns behind the pain, which the clinic regards as an important part of understanding and managing complex, long-standing problems.

Patients receive an explanation of their assessment findings, a diagnosis where appropriate, and a treatment plan so they know what to expect. As practitioners registered with the General Osteopathic Council, the team will not treat unnecessarily; whether and how often a patient returns is always agreed after findings and recommendations have been explained.

A Special Commitment to Mothers and Babies

Family care sits at the heart of the practice. Around one-third of its patients are babies, and the clinic takes pride in supporting parents from pregnancy onwards. Its osteopaths are highly experienced in assessing and caring for infants and children, using gentle cranial and other osteopathic techniques, with attention to concerns such as feeding, digestion, sleep and positional plagiocephaly, and referring for other medical advice where appropriate.

Support for expectant mothers forms part of the same continuum, with osteopathic care adapted to the changing demands of pregnancy. The clinic’s commitment extends beyond its treatment rooms: every Tuesday morning it supports a free breastfeeding group at Joe & The Juice, a welcoming space where mothers can meet, ask questions and receive expert guidance.

Through this and other community projects, Fulham Osteopaths gives back over £30,000 worth of professional time each year, helping local families access the care and advice they need.

Gentle, Personalised Treatment

Treatment at the clinic is often gentle and relaxing; patients commonly describe the experience as quiet and delicate. The team’s philosophy is that understanding the relationships between different parts of the body, including muscles, joints, posture and movement, can be important in identifying what contributes to pain and discomfort. Treatment aims to reduce strain, improve mobility and support the body’s natural recovery processes.

Practitioners are extensively trained in helping people in considerable pain safely and effectively, and joint manipulation, the “clicking” some patients ask about, is only a very small part of the work, discussed openly and used only when it is the right option for an effective and safe recovery.

No two people are the same, and no two treatments are either. Each plan is shaped around the individual’s goals, easing pain, improving mobility or supporting overall health, and reviewed and adapted as the body changes and improves. The aim is always to feel better not just now, but for the long term.

A Building Designed Around Human Beings

The clinic’s premises tell their own story. Number 769 Fulham Road was once a pet shop and later a printer’s; when the Cottons took it over it was a tired light-industrial site, which they stripped out and rebuilt to their own specifications as an osteopathy practice, designed, in their words, with the needs of human beings in mind.

Every room was planned to have natural light where possible, fresh air and the right colour, texture and feel, using green and environmentally healthy options wherever possible: full-spectrum lighting, fresh-air ventilation rather than air conditioning, natural non-toxic paints, wax-based floor finishes free of organic solvents, warm-water underfloor heating, natural cleaning products, extensive use of wood and leather rather than plastic, and custom soundproofing that also keeps the temperature even and economical to maintain.

Andrew Cotton, one of the clinic’s directors, once helped write a book on the ecological home, and that knowledge has been put to work throughout the building.

A Team and Reception at the Heart of the Practice

Osteopathic training typically involves four years of full-time study, and Fulham Osteopaths carefully selects and trains all of its practitioners. The clinic’s experienced team is complemented by reception staff it regards as central to what makes the practice special, friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to help with advice, reassurance or finding the right appointment.

With almost four decades of experience, a reputation for helping patients with complex cases, deep roots in the local community and a purpose-built home on Fulham Road, Fulham Osteopaths continues to offer Fulham families expert osteopathic treatment delivered with skill, patience and genuine care.
