A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has highlighted the alarming situation detailed in the latest UN Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report, which indicates that Gaza is grappling with severe levels of food insecurity, with expectations of further deterioration.
It is utterly unacceptable that approximately 1.2 million individuals are enduring critical food shortages, while 90% of the population is restricted to a mere 30% of the Gaza Strip. The threshold for success cannot simply be the prevention of famine.
Impact of Restrictions on Humanitarian Aid
The spokesperson further noted that the ongoing Israeli restrictions on aid, coupled with recurrent displacements, are exacerbating health crises, contributing to the spread of diseases, and leading to severe water shortages. The integrity of humanitarian aid must be preserved and never be exploited as a political instrument.
The UK remains committed to supporting humanitarian organisations operating within the region and will continue to advocate for Israel to facilitate the entry of aid and commercial goods into Gaza at the required scale to address the urgent needs of the population.
