Families Save Big with Summer Savings Scheme: Over 14 Million Free Bus Journeys Provided

During the month of August, millions of children under the age of 16 took advantage of free bus travel across England, exploring parks, museums, and beaches as part of the Great British Summer Savings Scheme. This initiative provided families with some relief from financial pressures while offering an array of cost-saving opportunities and discounts.

Recent data reveals that over 14.5 million children enjoyed complimentary bus rides this summer, thanks to the government’s Summer Bus Fare Offer. This scheme allowed youngsters aged between 5 and 15 to travel without charge during their holidays, enabling them to visit various attractions while alleviating the financial burden on their families. The Confederation of Passenger Transport and participating operators have noted a significant increase in passenger numbers as a result of this initiative.

Encouraging Family Outings

With typical child fares reaching up to £2, the free travel initiative provided substantial savings for families using participating bus services from 1 August to 31 August 2026. Simon Lightwood, the Buses and Local Transport Minister, expressed his delight at the success of the programme, stating, “Whether it’s a trip to the seaside, a park, or a museum, it’s great to see that millions of children used the bus for free this summer.”

Lightwood emphasised that the Great British Summer Savings Scheme has afforded families much-needed relief amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. He added that efforts are underway to reinvigorate bus travel across the nation, including a £2 fare cap slated for implementation next year and the introduction of 24/7 bus services for disabled passengers.

Record Passenger Numbers

Graham Vidler, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, highlighted the achievement of providing over 14 million free child journeys this summer, noting that this figure equates to two journeys for every young person in England. He remarked that many children and their families have had the opportunity to explore their local areas and enjoy the benefits of travelling by bus.

As the autumn months approach, buses will continue to play a vital role in transporting children to school while offering affordable ticketing options for all customers. Lydia Horbury, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK, praised the initiative, stating, “This is a fantastic result. Free bus travel has helped families make the most of the summer, while giving millions of young people the freedom to get out, explore, and enjoy everything their local communities have to offer.”

Transforming Perceptions of Bus Travel

September marks the beginning of Catch the Bus Month, an initiative aimed at challenging outdated perceptions of bus travel and encouraging more people to consider it as a viable option. The recent figures demonstrate the potential for increased bus usage when barriers are removed, making travel affordable and convenient. Horbury added that when young people experience the benefits of bus travel, it can foster a lifelong habit, which is advantageous for passengers, communities, and the future of sustainable transport.

Across various regions, from the north-east to the East Midlands and the south-west, the free bus fares have significantly boosted youth travel. For instance, one service in the north-east reported a staggering 710% increase in child passengers compared to the previous summer. In Greater Manchester, the Bee Network recorded nearly 1.7 million children using their buses this summer—an increase of 748,000 from last year—while bus services in the East Midlands nearly doubled their passenger numbers.

Ongoing Commitment to Affordable Travel

The success of the Great British Summer Savings Scheme is part of the government’s broader commitment to enhancing the affordability and accessibility of bus travel. This includes the introduction of the £2 bus fare cap scheduled for January 2027, as well as provisions for disabled pass holders to access free bus travel around the clock.
