A Lifelong Passion for Aviation

Kate Board’s fascination with flying began in her youth, inspired by the sight of small aircraft overhead. “When I turned 19, my father asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I simply requested a flying lesson,” she shared during an interview at Upminster’s Damyns Hall Aerodrome, where the blimp is currently docked. “After the briefing, the instructor handed me the controls, and within moments, I knew I was destined to become a pilot.”

Her journey started at RAF Manston, where she took on various roles, from answering phones to fuelling planes. Instead of monetary compensation, she was rewarded with flying time—an innovative arrangement that further fuelled her ambition. Subsequently, Kate joined Virgin Balloon Flights and soon received an offer to fly airships from a base in White Waltham. At just 22, she found herself living a life filled with travel and adventure, which she embraced wholeheartedly.

Memorable Experiences in the Sky

One of Kate’s earliest assignments with Goodyear was at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 1999, where she witnessed a dramatic race incident involving three cars. However, a standout moment for her occurred at the turn of the millennium. “At 11.59pm on December 31, 1999, I was airborne over Barcelona, and it was breathtaking,” she reminisced with a laugh. “As the clock struck midnight, the Goodyear Blimp illuminated from within, and the entire city erupted in fireworks. It was truly spectacular and a memory I cherish.”

Yet, for Kate, no city compares to London. She appreciates the city’s unique blend of history and modernity, noting, “In London, we have this wonderful contrast with old and new architecture. The Houses of Parliament, Elizabeth Tower, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Buckingham Palace are all sights I’ve had the pleasure of seeing from above.” The juxtaposition of the historic with the contemporary, such as The Shard and The Gherkin, creates a picturesque view that she finds unparalleled.

The Blimp’s Return to the UK

The Goodyear Blimp is currently stationed in the UK until July 14, marking its first visit since 2022. When not in flight, the airship is moored at its headquarters near Lake Constance in Germany. Over the past week, social media has been abuzz with images of the blimp soaring above the London Eye and the River Thames. At 75 metres long and nearly 18 metres high, it certainly commands attention.

“People often think we are flying much lower than we actually are,” Kate humorously noted. “We frequently hear, ‘The Zeppelin flew over my house at 50 feet!’ but in reality, we are at least 1,000 feet up. It just appears lower because of its size. Occasionally, depending on the weather, we can even catch a whiff of what people are cooking for dinner.”

Breaking Barriers in Aviation

As one of the few female Zeppelin pilots, Kate takes pride in her achievements and is keen to challenge sexist stereotypes within the industry. “I am proud to have made my mark in what was predominantly a male-dominated field in the early stages of my career,” she stated. “The glass ceiling remains unshattered, but I aim to inspire others.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of her job is when young girls approach her with aspirations of becoming pilots. “When they ask, ‘Can I be a pilot?’ I always affirm, ‘Of course you can!’ It’s about helping to make dreams a reality,” she emphasised. A particularly memorable flight involved a woman over 100 years old, who arrived with a voucher for an original Zeppelin flight. “She had dreamed of flying in one since her youth, and it was an honour to fulfil that wish for her,” Kate recalled, highlighting the joy that her role brings.
