English Whisky Celebrates New Protected Status: A Toast to Tradition and Quality

English Whisky has achieved a significant milestone by securing protected Geographical Indication (GI) status, marking a pivotal moment for a sector that has evolved from a few trailblazing producers into one of England’s most promising food and drink narratives.

This new designation officially acknowledges English Whisky as a unique category, a testament to years of dedication from producers throughout England who have blended craftsmanship, innovation, and ambition to create a spirit deserving of such recognition.

Growth of English Whisky Distilleries

Spanning from Cornwall to Northumberland, the English Whisky sector is not only enhancing local communities but also safeguarding skilled employment while attracting visitors nationwide, thus stimulating economic growth across various regions.

Currently, there are over 70 distilleries engaged in producing English whisky, a notable increase from 46 in 2023. Additionally, bottles are being exported to more than 30 countries worldwide. Industry estimates suggest that the maturing stock held in casks throughout England is valued at approximately £1 billion, highlighting the growing confidence and investment in the sector.

Acknowledgment from Government Officials

Dame Angela Eagle, the Environment Secretary, commented on the achievement, stating, “The UK is home to world-class whisky production, from grain to glass. This new protected status stands proudly alongside Scotch, Welsh, and Irish whiskies, recognising English Whisky’s unique character and the expert craftsmanship involved in its creation.”

She added that this milestone will have a far-reaching impact, fostering job creation, investment, and community pride across the nation.

Collaboration and Future Prospects

The application for GI status was spearheaded by the English Whisky Guild, representing its member distilleries, and uniting producers with a common goal of highlighting the distinct qualities, provenance, and burgeoning international standing of English Whisky.

Morag Garden, CEO of the English Whisky Guild, expressed her enthusiasm about the achievement: “Securing GI status is a landmark accomplishment for English Whisky, recognising the quality and innovation within our expanding industry. We are thankful to Defra and everyone involved in this collaborative initiative. This milestone will bolster future growth and enhance international recognition for English Whisky.”

Ensuring Compliance and Future Growth

With English Whisky now joining the ranks of Scotch, Welsh, and Irish whiskies as a recognised and protected category, it showcases the diversity, quality, and inventive spirit of whisky production across the United Kingdom.

To fully leverage this new protected status, English Whisky producers must first be validated under HMRC’s Spirit Drink Verification Scheme. As the sector continues to grow, this protection will be crucial in maintaining the reputation of English Whisky while supporting skilled jobs, local investments, and the vibrant communities that are integral to its success.
