Ed Miliband’s New Role as Foreign Secretary: Key Insights and Statements

It is both a significant honour and a privilege to have been appointed by the Prime Minister as Foreign Secretary.

My family arrived in Britain as Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. For them, this country represented not only a refuge but also a symbol of hope in the global battle against fascism. I will carry forward my parents’ belief in the enduring spirit of Britain as I undertake my responsibilities in representing our nation.

As Foreign Secretary, I am committed to championing Britain’s interests and upholding our core values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law on the international stage.

Addressing Global Instability

Today, we find ourselves in a period of unprecedented instability and threats to international law and democracy, surpassing levels not seen since the Second World War. In this context, our values have never been more vital.

From Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the ramifications of a more perilous world are evident in the cost-of-living crisis affecting families and businesses alike.

For Britain, this necessitates collaboration with our allies to defend the principles we hold dear, as it aligns with our national interests. I aim to build upon the exemplary work of my predecessors and colleagues, Yvette Cooper and David Lammy.

Strengthening Key Alliances

I will prioritise deepening and strengthening our strategic partnership with the European Union, which is essential for our prosperity and security. At the same time, I will nurture our strong, enduring, and vital alliance with the United States. Upholding our commitments to multilateral institutions, from NATO to the UN, is paramount, alongside fostering relationships with global partners, particularly those in the Global South.

Advocating for our interests and values entails continuing our support for the people of Ukraine in their struggle against Russia’s unlawful aggression, a commitment that has been steadfast for the past four years. It also involves our efforts to help resolve the conflict in Iran and ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, we must tirelessly pursue a sustainable peace between Palestine and Israel, addressing the dire suffering of the people in Gaza while ensuring security for Israeli citizens.

Commitment to Justice and Equality

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) that I will lead is committed to confronting issues that pose significant threats to justice and equality in Britain and beyond. Our work will focus on addressing the climate crisis, bolstering international development partnerships, and reforming global institutions to better serve all nations, including the world’s most vulnerable populations.

The FCDO is a distinguished British institution, staffed by talented, expert, and dedicated individuals who perform vital consular work and have a global reach. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with Britain’s exceptional network of embassies, diplomats, civil servants, businesses, and cultural organisations to promote and represent the interests and values of our great nation.
