Discover the Lifelong Health Benefits of Physical Activity for Every Age

Discover the Lifelong Health Benefits of Physical Activity for Every Age

It is widely acknowledged that engaging in physical activity is beneficial for one’s health. In fact, exercising more frequently ranks as one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions across the UK, as indicated by various surveys.

Recent years have seen a surge in research clarifying the extensive advantages of physical activity for both physical and mental health. The evidence supporting this claim has become increasingly solid for both men and women. Regular exercise has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of numerous health conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, dementia, diabetes, breast cancer, bowel cancer, arthritis, and depression.

Updated Guidelines from UK Chief Medical Officers

The UK Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) have recently revised their principal guidelines on physical activity to incorporate the latest findings. They emphasise that even minimal amounts of physical activity can lead to substantial improvements in overall physical and mental well-being, particularly for those who currently engage in little to no exercise. Furthermore, the benefits of physical activity increase markedly with every additional increment, reaching a target of 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Although the health rewards continue to grow beyond this threshold, they do so at a slower pace. Therefore, individuals should not feel discouraged if they believe they cannot achieve the full 150 minutes—starting small can lead to significant benefits.

In addition to the general enhancement of health, it is crucial to engage in activities that promote strength and balance. As individuals age, they naturally lose muscle mass; maintaining strength and balance can be pivotal in determining whether one leads an active, independent lifestyle or faces early frailty and dependency. Since the last review of the guidelines, many individuals have initiated treatment with GLP-1 agonist medications for diabetes and weight management. For those on these medications, focusing on strength training becomes essential as they lose weight to safeguard muscle integrity.

Finding Enjoyable and Sustainable Activities

Physical activity is far more likely to be sustained when it is either enjoyable, functional, or ideally both, and incorporated into a daily routine. Various forms of activity can contribute positively to health, including active transportation such as walking, cycling, and wheeling, participation in sports, visits to the gym, running, and even dancing. Whether undertaken in groups, with friends, or solo, finding an activity that resonates with you is vital. Interestingly, starting a new exercise regimen in mid-July can often feel more achievable than tackling it at the beginning of January.
