A woman from London has tragically lost precious memories of her late father following a catastrophic fire that devastated her shop, Wings World, alongside over 200 other local businesses. Megan Wing, aged 28, established her thrift shop in North London as a tribute to her father, who passed away eight years ago. The fire, which occurred last month at the Brent business park, has left her grappling with the loss of years of dedication and hard work.

Megan’s entrepreneurial journey began in her mother’s kitchen, where she started selling items on Depop in 2020 while juggling three different jobs. Her efforts culminated in securing a permanent location at Oxgate House in Brent, a venture inspired by her father, who “taught her everything.” Unfortunately, on June 11, a fire broke out, engulfing the building and resulting in widespread destruction across the area.

Struggles of Rebuilding

As Megan contemplates the daunting task of rebuilding her business, she has expressed concerns regarding the transparency of the space’s owners, Artistic Spaces, particularly regarding their plans for compensation. “Things have been rough. I built this business, and it’s something I’ve done every single day,” she shared. “Now I have nothing; the fact that it’s all gone, like it never existed, is devastating.” The emotional toll is compounded by the fact that Megan was only 20 when her father died, and her shop was a means of transforming her grief into purpose.

Her father was a prominent wholesaler in the military memorabilia sector, and the items he used for his business held significant sentimental value, now lost to the flames. Megan has voiced her frustration over the lack of communication from Artistic Spaces, stating she has received minimal updates and remains uncertain about the status of her deposit and rent payments. “We want to know what’s happening. I don’t know if I’m getting my deposit back or the month’s rent I paid,” she lamented.

Concerns Over Safety and Infrastructure

Megan raised concerns regarding safety protocols, noting that the sprinklers failed to activate during the fire. Furthermore, she described the poor condition of her unit, where structural issues had previously been reported but left unaddressed. “When I moved into the unit, the bottom of my mezzanine was held together by sellotape,” she recounted. Despite her requests for repairs, including fixing rough edges that prevented her from obtaining liability insurance, no action was taken prior to the incident.

She also highlighted the plight of her neighbours, one of whom, a 70-year-old rug seller, was uninsured and now faces significant losses. The physical state of the building is alarming, with extensive water damage and structural deterioration following the fire. Some demolition is anticipated, yet many affected are still awaiting clarity on how the fire originated.

George Marnier, Co-Managing Director of Artistic Spaces, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “This has been a devastating incident for everyone affected. Our priority is supporting affected occupiers and working responsibly with the relevant authorities.” He reassured that they remain in contact with tenants as progress unfolds and that they intend to restore Oxgate House for independent businesses.

Wings World is renowned for offering secondhand and unique items, often auctioned live by Megan. Committed to sustainability, she sources clothing that would otherwise end up in landfills. In the wake of the fire, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has received an outpouring of support, including donations from customers she has never met. One individual even sold her entire wardrobe to contribute to Megan’s cause.

“It’s honestly been overwhelming,” Megan reflected on the generosity shown by the community, particularly given her previous role in fundraising for charitable causes. “I’ve had messages from strangers who were former customers saying that this has really affected them. I do live streaming as that’s how I sell the clothes, and many customers have expressed how much they’ve missed it.” Despite the challenges, Megan remains hopeful for the future, stating, “They say that through the fire, the phoenix rises from the ashes.
