Can You Spot the Sniper? MOD Invites Public to Identify Hidden Threats in Military Training Zone

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has issued a public challenge to test observation skills through an engaging new initiative titled “Spot the Sniper.” This interactive campaign invites participants to identify highly trained snipers concealed within a series of realistic photographs captured in authentic military training environments located across Salisbury Plain Training Area, which includes a variety of settings such as woodlands, scrublands, and open terrains.

Each image features a sniper camouflaged using advanced military techniques, prompting audiences to locate them before their positions are ultimately disclosed. This initiative not only provides an entertaining challenge but also underscores the MOD’s commitment to safety, as it forms part of the broader Respect the Range campaign aimed at mitigating the risks associated with public access to military training areas and ensuring the uninterrupted operation of Armed Forces activities.

Understanding Military Camouflage and Safety

The creative concept of the Spot the Sniper campaign is intended to highlight the effectiveness of military personnel in remaining concealed during training exercises. It serves to educate the public on the importance of not assuming that an area is inactive simply because there is no visible or audible military presence. This understanding is crucial in fostering a safer relationship between the military and the communities surrounding training areas.

Brigadier Gavin Hatcher, Head of the Overseas and Training Estate, remarked on the significance of this initiative: “Our Armed Forces train year-round to maintain their readiness and operational capability. While some training activities may be overt, much of our work occurs without being seen or heard. It is essential not to assume that an area is inactive just because there is no visible military presence. We encourage the public to support our Armed Forces by accessing MOD land only where permitted and by adhering to all access guidelines.”

Guidelines for Public Access to MOD Land

An Army representative further emphasised the importance of undetected training, stating: “During our exercises, we strive to replicate real-world scenarios. A critical element of our role is to remain unseen, which demands absolute focus and concentration. It is vital for us to conduct our training without disruption to maintain the skills and readiness we may need at a moment’s notice.”

Members of the public are permitted to access specific areas of MOD land but are urged to follow essential guidelines to ensure safety: 

• Adhere to all posted signs and information, and comply with instructions from MOD personnel. If a red flag is displayed or a red light is flashing, do not enter.
• Stick to designated routes, including public footpaths, bridleways, and Public Rights of Way.
• Keep dogs under close control, ensuring they remain in sight, and always clean up after them.
• Do not touch any military debris; instead, report it for safe removal.
• Avoid lighting fires or using barbecues, and dispose of cigarettes and litter responsibly.
