At the request of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, the Secretary of State has sanctioned an extension to a transitional provision established under the Legacy Act. This extension will permit the Ombudsman to undertake post-investigative tasks in a limited number of outstanding cases until 31 October 2027. Initially, the period set under the Legacy Act was scheduled to conclude on 30 April 2025. However, the Government has extended this timeline on three occasions to facilitate the completion of post-investigative work by the Police Ombudsman and other investigative bodies.
Commitment to Transparency for Families
The Government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that families receive timely information regarding the circumstances surrounding their loved ones. To further this objective, it is actively advancing the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, which aims to repeal and supersede the Legacy Act. This legislative move is designed to enhance the process of investigation and provide clearer pathways for families seeking answers.
