Break the Stigma: Discover How the St John Ambulance ‘CPR Bra’ Campaign Transforms Breast Awareness and Saves Lives

Break the Stigma: Discover How the St John Ambulance 'CPR Bra' Campaign Transforms Breast Awareness and Saves Lives

Raising Awareness for Life-Saving CPR Techniques

A new initiative by St John Ambulance seeks to alleviate the hesitations surrounding the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations. The campaign aims to communicate a vital message: it is perfectly acceptable to touch someone’s chest when attempting to save their life.

Surprisingly, a significant number of men express hesitation about performing CPR on women due to fears of being accused of inappropriate conduct. A recent survey revealed that nearly a third of male respondents hold such concerns, while similar proportions worry about unintentionally causing harm or worsening the situation. This has prompted the charity to launch a campaign aimed at educating the public on the importance of immediate action in life-threatening situations.

Survey Insights and Generational Concerns

The findings stem from a survey of 2,000 participants, commissioned by St John Ambulance in light of this year’s Restart a Heart Day, an event dedicated to teaching essential CPR skills in collaboration with various health partners. The data indicates that Millennials are particularly apprehensive about social media scrutiny, with over one in four reporting concerns about their online image during a rescue attempt. This is closely followed by Gen Z, where approximately one in six share similar worries, and Gen X, with one in five expressing apprehension. Unsurprisingly, Baby Boomers exhibit the least concern, with only one in ten feeling the same pressure.

Interestingly, almost 70% of men indicated that they would feel more assured about administering CPR if they had received more training. Furthermore, 60% stated they would be more inclined to perform CPR after being made aware of the campaign’s messaging.

Introducing the ‘CPR Bra’ for Reassurance

This year, St John Ambulance has introduced a novel concept: the ‘CPR Bra’. This innovative garment is designed to reassure individuals that taking swift action is imperative in a life-or-death situation, irrespective of gender. The bra prominently displays the message ‘It’s OK to Save My Life’, alongside scissor icons indicating where clothing should be cut to effectively apply defibrillator pads. This initiative serves as a poignant reminder that every second counts during a cardiac arrest.

The charity’s spokesperson emphasised the importance of taking action, noting, “It’s crucial that we don’t shame anyone for hesitating, as these fears are valid. However, no one should ever feel intimidated to attempt to save a life. Education is the key to fostering confidence, and the CPR Bra empowers more individuals to take decisive measures.”

The Urgency of Early CPR and Defibrillation

In the UK, there are over 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) annually, with a survival rate of less than 10%. Alarmingly, 40% of these cases involve individuals aged 15 to 64, and about one third are women, with the highest incidence observed in women aged 55 to 59. Early CPR and defibrillation can significantly increase the chances of survival, with each passing minute without these interventions reducing the likelihood of recovery by up to 10%.

While physical health factors such as age and the number of births are known to elevate risks associated with cardiac issues, social determinants like deprivation and obesity also play a crucial role. These under-recognised risks must be acknowledged and addressed to improve overall health outcomes.

Personal Stories Highlighting the Importance of CPR

Support for the campaign comes from various public figures, including actor Nikki Sanderson, who has experienced the critical need for CPR first-hand. Reflecting on her mother’s cardiac arrest in 2021, she stated, “It’s distressing to learn that so many people are less likely to assist a woman in distress. If we had hesitated, my mother might not be here today. We need to dismantle these barriers and challenge the stigma surrounding CPR.”

As part of the Restart a Heart Day initiative, St John Ambulance encourages everyone to learn CPR and spread the essential message that it is acceptable to administer this life-saving technique. This includes necessary actions such as cutting away clothing to access a defibrillator.

Prioritising Heart Health

The campaign also serves as a timely reminder for individuals to take proactive steps in maintaining their heart health. As cardiac arrest can strike anyone at any time, knowing how to perform CPR could effectively double a person’s chances of survival in such emergencies.

By fostering a culture of preparedness and education, St John Ambulance aims to empower individuals to act decisively in emergencies, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to survive cardiac incidents. The importance of learning CPR cannot be overstated, as evidenced by the stories of real-life heroes who have saved lives through their quick actions and knowledge of this vital skill.
