Simon Ridley Joins Department for Education as New Permanent Secretary

The Cabinet Secretary, with the Prime Minister’s endorsement, has appointed Simon Ridley as the new Permanent Secretary for the Department for Education (DfE). He succeeds Susan Acland-Hood, who is transitioning to a new position outside the government.

Currently serving as the Second Permanent Secretary at the Home Office, Simon Ridley has previously held the role of acting Permanent Secretary at the Home Office on two separate occasions and has led the Cabinet Office COVID-19 Taskforce.

Gratitude for Leadership

Lucy Powell, the Secretary of State for Education, expressed her gratitude towards Susan Acland-Hood for her leadership within the department. She remarked:

“I want to thank Susan Acland-Hood for her leadership of the department. Susan has been an exceptional Permanent Secretary and public servant—helping children and families recover from the pandemic, expanding childcare provision, strengthening the skills system, and so much more.”

Powell further noted the government’s commitment to ensuring that every child, irrespective of their background, can achieve success. She is eager to collaborate with Simon Ridley, who she believes possesses a wealth of experience and a proven record of effective delivery.
