The Royal Courts of Justice witnessed a significant event today as Ellie Reeves KC MP and Andy Slaughter MP were officially sworn in as the new Law Officers of England and Wales. This ceremony marks a pivotal moment following their appointments earlier in July of this year. In addition to Reeves and Slaughter, the Rt Hon Alex Norris MP also took the oath of office as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.
Commitment to Legal Accessibility
Upon her swearing-in, Attorney General Ellie Reeves KC MP expressed her profound honour at taking on the role. She highlighted the importance of inclusivity within the legal profession, emphasising that everyone, regardless of their background, should have access to legal opportunities. This commitment to diversity and openness will be a cornerstone of her tenure in office.
Reeves, who previously served as Solicitor General, reaffirmed her dedication to addressing pressing societal issues, particularly violence against women and girls, which she identified as her foremost priority. She conveyed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Andy Slaughter MP, as they both strive to uphold the rule of law and enhance public confidence in the criminal justice system.
Strengthening the Justice System
Solicitor General Andy Slaughter MP also shared his sentiments during the ceremony, describing it as a privilege to assume a role that is integral to the constitutional framework of the United Kingdom. He noted the unique position of Solicitor General as a vital link between the law and government, tasked with ensuring effective governance.
Reflecting on his experience as Chair of the Justice Select Committee, Slaughter acknowledged the significant pressures confronting the justice system and expressed his eagerness to work alongside the Attorney General to tackle these challenges head-on. He reiterated the necessity of restoring and maintaining public trust in the justice system.
Roles and Responsibilities of Law Officers
The roles of the Attorney General and Solicitor General extend beyond mere advisory capacities to the Government; they also oversee important legal departments. These include the Crown Prosecution Service, the Serious Fraud Office, the Government Legal Department, and the HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate.
In addition to their advisory and supervisory duties, the Law Officers are entrusted with various public interest functions. These responsibilities encompass initiating referrals to the Court of Appeal for reviewing sentences under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, taking legal action against contempt of court, and granting consent to prosecute specific offences.
Ellie Reeves KC MP officially took up her position as Attorney General on 20 July 2026, while Andy Slaughter MP was appointed Solicitor General on 21 July 2026.
