This afternoon, the Prime Minister engaged in discussions with Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, to explore avenues for closer collaboration between the United Kingdom and Mauritius.
The Prime Minister articulated his vision for a partnership that harnesses the strengths of both nations. He highlighted the substantial mutual benefits that could arise from cooperative efforts addressing various shared challenges. These include tackling climate change, combating illicit financial activities, and enhancing economic growth and trade, all with the aim of creating opportunities for citizens in both countries.
Commitment to Strategic Collaboration
In addressing the future of the military facility on Diego Garcia, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with both Mauritius and the United States. He emphasised the importance of ensuring the continued operation of the base while safeguarding the national security interests of the United Kingdom.
The conversation also led to an agreement between the two leaders to maintain ongoing communications. The Prime Minister expressed optimism that the UK Foreign Secretary and Mauritian Foreign Minister Ramful would have the opportunity to meet later this week during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This meeting is anticipated to further solidify the burgeoning relationship between the UK and Mauritius.
