LawtechUK represents the Ministry of Justice’s flagship initiative aimed at fostering innovation within the legal services sector. Since its inception in 2019, the programme has significantly accelerated the development and adoption of legal technologies throughout England and Wales. It not only supports legal businesses in their innovative pursuits but also enhances access to legal services, thereby reinforcing the UK’s status as a global leader in legal provision.

New Phase of Implementation

As the programme gears up for a new phase of delivery set to run from November 2026 to March 2029, the Ministry of Justice is refreshing its advisory arrangements. This adjustment is intended to ensure that both the government and the successful grant recipient benefit from independent expertise, constructive challenges, and practical guidance.

To achieve this, the Ministry is inviting expressions of interest from individuals with diverse expertise in legal services, lawtech, technology, academia, access to justice, and innovation. These experts will play a crucial role in shaping the future trajectory of the programme.

Available Roles in LawtechUK

The initiative offers two main roles: members of the LawtechUK Advisory Board and LawtechUK Ambassadors. The Advisory Board will provide strategic oversight and independent advice on the programme’s delivery. Board members will collaborate closely with Ministry officials and the successful grant recipient, offering constructive criticism and practical recommendations to ensure the programme:

• Delivers value for money
• Aligns with government priorities
• Responds effectively to emerging opportunities within the legal innovation landscape
• Facilitates meaningful engagement across the sector

In addition to the Advisory Board, the Ministry of Justice is establishing a network of LawtechUK Ambassadors. These individuals will champion the programme within their professional networks, engage stakeholders, mentor participants when appropriate, and contribute to various programme activities. Unlike Board members, Ambassadors will not hold formal governance or advisory roles; rather, they will provide a flexible avenue for individuals to offer their expertise.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

Expressions of interest are welcomed from individuals across a broad spectrum of sectors, including legal services, lawtech enterprises, technology companies, charities focused on access to justice, academia, the judiciary, business and investment, and the wider legal innovation ecosystem. The Ministry particularly encourages applications from those with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

For the LawtechUK Advisory Board specifically, candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• Leadership in lawtech startups or scale-ups
• Innovation within legal services
• Small and medium-sized legal services
• Academic research
• Access to justice and legal innovation

The goal is to assemble a team with a robust overall combination of expertise rather than appointing individuals to fill specific profiles.

Application Process for Interested Candidates

Applicants for the LawtechUK Advisory Board should submit the following:

• A CV (maximum of two sides of A4)
• A statement of suitability (maximum 750 words) detailing how they meet the essential criteria and relevant membership profiles
• A completed conflicts of interest declaration
• A confirmation indicating whether they wish to be considered for the Ambassador network role if they are not selected for the Advisory Board

For those applying solely for the LawtechUK Ambassador role, the requirements include:

• A CV (maximum of two sides of A4)
• A brief statement (maximum 250 words) outlining their potential contributions to the programme
• A completed conflicts of interest declaration

Selection and Timeline for Appointments

The selection process for these roles will be conducted through an open and transparent competition. Expressions of interest will be evaluated against the stated essential criteria and membership profiles, with final appointments made to ensure a strong balance of skills, expertise, and experience. Conflicts of interest will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and will not automatically disqualify candidates.

The indicative timeline for the recruitment process is as follows:

• 5:00 PM on Monday, 5 October 2026 – Closing date for applications
• Mid-October 2026 – Interviews (if required)
• Week commencing 26 October 2026 – Candidates notified of the outcome
• Week commencing 2 November 2026 – Announcements of LawtechUK Advisory Board and Ambassador appointments
