In July 2026, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) announced that over 92% of eligible vessels are now equipped with a Nemo device. This significant achievement comes on the heels of efforts to rectify the interruption of data transmissions from SC2 devices to the UK Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) Hub.
Nearly half of the registered devices have already been installed, with the remaining installations anticipated to be completed in the upcoming weeks. As the rollout of these replacement devices continues, the MMO is preparing to resume standard compliance and enforcement of I-VMS requirements for licensed English fishing vessels under 12 metres in length.
Encouragement for Vessel Owners
Vessel owners who have yet to acquire an MMO-approved I-VMS device are strongly encouraged to do so without delay. The MMO has proactively reached out to those affected, providing them with essential information regarding the process of updating their records or purchasing a device.
To comply with the regulations, vessels are required to carry an MMO-approved I-VMS device that is capable of transmitting data to the UK VMS Hub. Owners awaiting installation are advised to ensure their Nemo device is charged for at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment and to verify that the green light indicator is illuminated. Until the installation, it is important that the devices are stored securely in their original packaging.
Airtime Payments and Support
CLS UK will reach out to vessel owners ahead of any airtime payment requests. It is anticipated that airtime contracts and renewals will commence once the enforcement of I-VMS returns to normal. Fishermen who have any concerns regarding their Nemo device, or suspect it may be malfunctioning, are encouraged to get in touch with CLS UK promptly, even if the warranty period has lapsed. Remedial action or replacement devices will be assessed on an individual basis.

The data collected through I-VMS is instrumental in supporting fisheries management and ensuring fair and consistent regulation throughout the fleet, as it provides precise information about vessel locations. This data is also vital for meeting evidence requirements, particularly in situations where the displacement of fishing activity may need to be evaluated for compensation purposes.
