UK and US Join Forces to Propel Fusion Energy Innovations for a Greener Future

The United Kingdom and the United States are poised to formalise two significant agreements during the Global Fusion Summit in London on Monday, 14 September. These agreements are intended to advance the development of fusion power and create over 10,000 jobs in the UK by the year 2030.

New Supercomputing Partnership Announced

The first agreement will initiate a supercomputing collaboration between the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. This partnership aims to harness leading expertise in artificial intelligence, computing, and fusion technology to expedite the path toward commercial fusion energy.

In addition, the summit will witness the signing of a Joint Statement by the UK and US, which will enhance cooperation on the regulation of fusion energy. This commitment is expected to foster investment and stimulate growth within the sector.

The Promise of Fusion Energy

Fusion energy operates by mimicking the natural process that fuels the sun, where hydrogen atoms are fused to release substantial energy. This method holds the potential to deliver a stable and clean energy source that can sustain future generations without emitting carbon during its operation. Furthermore, it has the capacity to generate numerous skilled jobs, bolster British enterprises, and unlock significant economic benefits for the UK.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks remarked, “Fusion has the potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy while supporting over 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030, attracting investment and creating major opportunities for British businesses.” He emphasised that strengthening the partnership with the US will hasten the transition to commercial fusion, converting cutting-edge research into tangible economic growth and solidifying Britain’s leadership in fusion energy.

Strengthening Transatlantic Ties

Chris Elmore, the FCDO Minister for the Americas, highlighted the importance of the UK-US relationship in fostering growth and job creation. “By uniting world-class expertise in fusion, artificial intelligence, and advanced computing, we are empowering British businesses and researchers to access the necessary investment, knowledge, and international partnerships essential for succeeding in future industries,” he stated.

In addition to the UK-US agreements, a collaboration worth £2.63 million has been secured by the University of Birmingham, the Electric Power Research Institute, and industry partners to focus on fusion materials. This initiative aims to enhance the UK’s industrial capabilities and promote international collaboration in this promising field of emerging technology.

International Investment in Fusion Technology

Kyoto Fusioneering, Japan’s leading fusion company, is set to invest up to £3 million in the UK through Project ALBION. This project will support the development and testing of materials for the STEP programme, which is backed by the UK government and is focused on designing a prototype fusion power plant.

These announcements coincide with the publication of the UK Fusion Investment Prospectus, which outlines the country’s offerings to companies and investors while preparing to seize opportunities within a projected global fusion market valued between £3 trillion and £12 trillion. This initiative aims to position the UK as a prime destination for fusion investment, transforming its world-leading research into a new clean energy industry.

Commitment to Fusion Energy Development

In June 2025, the UK government announced a groundbreaking investment of over £2.5 billion in fusion energy over five years, contributing to its strategic resource allocation. Furthermore, the UK has established a dedicated regulatory framework for fusion energy, which includes a draft Fusion National Policy Statement to facilitate the future deployment of fusion power plants.

The STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme aims to deliver a prototype fusion power plant by 2040, establishing the West Burton site in Nottinghamshire as a hub for clean energy, job creation, and economic growth. The government is also investing £180 million in the Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation (LIBRTI) programme, designed to address key technical challenges faced by future fusion power plants.

Additionally, a £125 million investment is being made in the AI Growth Zone at Culham, which includes £45 million allocated for the SUNRISE supercomputer. This initiative is set to place the UK at the forefront of utilising AI and advanced computing in fusion research, ensuring it remains competitive in the global energy landscape.
