Exploring the Pelican Nebula

The Pelican Nebula is undergoing a gradual transformation, as highlighted in this stunning image. Known scientifically as IC 5070, this nebula is separated from the larger North America Nebula by a molecular cloud teeming with dark dust. The striking photograph, taken in Utah, USA, is the result of an impressive 25 hours of exposure, showcasing intricate details of the filamentary dust that characterises the region.

This nebula is of particular interest to astronomers due to its dynamic environment, which is a hotbed of star formation intermingled with evolving clouds of gas. Young, energetic stars emit light that gradually changes the properties of the surrounding cold gas into hot gas. This transition is marked by what is known as an ionisation front, which is prominently visible in bright orange on the upper right of the image. Meanwhile, particularly dense tentacles of cold gas continue to persist, contributing to the nebula’s complexity.

The Future of the Pelican Nebula

As millions of years pass, the Pelican Nebula, bordered by the dark nebula LDN 935, may undergo significant changes. The distribution and interaction of stars and gas will likely evolve to create a different appearance altogether, resulting in a celestial landscape that may no longer resemble the Pelican we recognise today.
