Son of Fallen Soldier Honours Father’s Legacy with New Building Unveiling in Iraq

The newly constructed Muir Building has been inaugurated in memory of SSgt Chris Muir, an Ammunition Technician who tragically lost his life while serving in Iraq in 2003. His son, Ben Muir, had the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open the block, alongside members of SSgt Muir’s extended family and several former colleagues who gathered to commemorate the occasion.

Prior to his deployment, SSgt Muir served as an instructor at DM Kineton. He was killed during an explosive ordnance disposal operation, and naming the building in his honour stands as a poignant reminder of the courage, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to duty that he exemplified throughout his career. This gesture ensures that future generations of Ammunition Technicians will remember and draw inspiration from his legacy.

Project Overview and Construction Methodology

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) spearheaded the project, with the construction carried out by Algeco on behalf of VIVO, a partner within DIO’s built estate sector. The Muir Building was developed using modern construction methods, where units were manufactured off-site and transported to DM Kineton for assembly. This modular approach not only streamlined the building process but also minimised disruption across the site during construction.

The facility features 46 ensuite bedrooms designated for officers and senior non-commissioned officers, with two rooms designed to be fully accessible. Additionally, the building includes kitchenettes, communal areas, laundry facilities, utility rooms, and a dedicated cycle store, enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

Commitment to Sustainability

The Muir Building is equipped with a range of sustainable features aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and reducing its environmental footprint. Solar panels on the roof contribute to the building’s power supply, while air source heat pumps ensure effective heating throughout the accommodation.

Furthermore, recycled water from sink drainage systems is repurposed for boot-washing stations, and the landscaping around the site includes the planting of additional trees, further promoting ecological sustainability.

Reflections from Family and Project Leaders

Ben Muir expressed his gratitude during the opening ceremony, stating, “It was a lovely surprise to hear that the building would be named after my Dad, ensuring that his example will continue to inspire ammunition technical officers for years to come. It was a great pleasure to be here to officially open the new block.”

Richard Walsh, Project Delivery Manager for DIO RD Central, remarked, “Reaching handover is a fantastic achievement and marks the culmination of significant effort from everyone involved in this project. The Muir Building offers modern, high-quality accommodation that will greatly enhance the living experience for personnel stationed at DM Kineton for many years ahead.”

A Tribute to a Dedicated Colleague

Lt Col Chris Ralling, Head of Establishment at DM Kineton, highlighted the emotional significance of the building’s name, saying, “The Muir Building honours one of our colleagues who tragically died on operations, so it was wonderful to be joined by his family for the opening. The new block will provide excellent sustainable accommodation for 46 personnel, along with comfortable communal areas and cooking facilities—a fitting tribute to a much-loved colleague.”

The first soldiers are set to move into the newly completed accommodation block in early September, marking the beginning of a new chapter for personnel at DM Kineton.
