Recent reports have highlighted three illegal waste disposal sites located in Peterlee and Hartlepool, both in County Durham, and Callerton, near Newcastle. In response, officers from the Environment Agency acted swiftly, collaborating with landowners to secure these locations by blocking access with concrete barriers.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted at all three sites, which are filled with shredded household refuse. Plans are also being developed in conjunction with the landowners to facilitate the removal of this waste.
Strengthening Measures Against Waste Crime
The Environment Agency is intensifying its efforts to combat waste crime as part of its newly introduced 10 Point Plan, aimed at addressing illegal activities proactively before they become entrenched. This initiative underscores their commitment to maintaining community standards and environmental integrity.
Mark Rumble, the Environmental Crime Team Leader at the Environment Agency, commented on the situation, stating, “We’ve taken quick action to block access to these sites to prevent further dumping, and investigations are underway. Illegal waste sites are a blight on our communities; residents should not have to endure unsightly conditions and unpleasant odours.” He further emphasised that the agency will ensure that those responsible for the illegal dumping will face consequences.
A Government Stance on Waste Criminals
Emma Hardy, Minister for Circular Economy and Waste Crime, echoed these sentiments, asserting that residents have the right to live free from the impacts of waste crime. She described the decisive measures taken in this instance as a reflection of the government’s commitment to tackling such criminal activities. Hardy highlighted that the government is actively dismantling the gangs behind illegal waste operations, bolstered by increased enforcement and deployment of more officers.
“My message to those engaged in this illicit trade is unequivocal: we are coming for you. We will seize your profits and redirect them towards clean-up efforts, as the era of impunity for these crimes is over,” she stated.
The Broader Impact of Illegal Waste Disposal
Illegally discarded waste not only poses significant risks to local communities and the environment but also undermines legitimate businesses that responsibly manage waste disposal. It is estimated that waste crime costs the UK upwards of £1 billion annually, placing an additional burden on landowners and community resources.
The Environment Agency is calling on the public to report any information regarding the three identified sites, or any suspicious activities related to waste crime in the area, including unusual movements of heavy goods vehicles onto vacant or open land.
How the Public Can Assist in Combating Waste Crime
Mark Rumble encouraged individuals to report any pertinent information either directly to the agency or anonymously through Crimestoppers. “Timely reports enhance our ability to investigate effectively and mitigate further illegal dumping,” he noted.
To support these efforts, the public is advised to take several precautionary measures: check the public register of waste carriers before hiring anyone to remove waste—anyone not listed is operating unlawfully; retain written documentation of where waste is disposed; and landowners should regularly inspect their vacant properties and lands to ensure they are secure. Installing secure barriers and, where feasible, CCTV can help prevent unauthorised access, as landowners may be held accountable for any illegal waste deposited on their premises.
Moreover, the Environment Agency encourages reporting of suspected waste crime. Each report contributes to a comprehensive understanding that aids in early intervention. Individuals are urged to contact Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or the Environment Agency incident line at 0800 807060 to report illegal dumping, suspicious waste movements, or unlicensed operators.
