Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition Launches Nationwide Tour with Prime Minister, The King and Queen, and President Macron in Attendance

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to join Their Majesties The King and Queen, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, for a visit to the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum today, marking its return to England after more than 900 years. This significant occasion highlights the strong ties between the UK and France, as the leaders convene for the first time to further enhance their collaborative efforts on shared issues affecting both nations.

Launching a Nationwide Education Initiative

The visit will also serve as the launch event for the British Museum’s ‘Bayeux Around Britain’ programme, a nationwide initiative aimed at bringing the rich narrative of the Bayeux Tapestry to communities throughout the UK. Over 70 partner organisations from all four nations have already signed up to participate, with plans for a digital exhibition to be showcased in various venues including museums, galleries, castles, cathedrals, and heritage sites across the country.

A noteworthy aspect of the programme includes a live national history lesson scheduled for 14 October, where thousands of schoolchildren will delve into the significance of the Bayeux Tapestry and its relevance in the intertwined histories of Britain and France. This initiative strives to provide children and young people with opportunities to engage with history and culture, ensuring equitable access to educational experiences regardless of geographical location—an essential priority for the Prime Minister.

Celebrating Shared Heritage

In his remarks, Prime Minister Burnham stated, “The return of the Bayeux Tapestry to England is a landmark moment in the history of our two nations, and I want people everywhere in the country to be able to enjoy it. The Bayeux Around Britain campaign will give communities across the UK the opportunity to learn about one of the defining stories of our past.” He emphasised the commitment to celebrating the shared heritage between the UK and France while reinforcing the relationship between the two nations.

The UK government allocates over £80 million annually to the British Museum, which facilitates initiatives like the Bayeux Around Britain programme, ensuring that cultural treasures reach diverse communities across the UK. Notable venues hosting digital displays include the Museum of Cornish Life in Cornwall, Knutsford Heritage Centre in Cheshire, East Riding Museum in Yorkshire, and The Great Tapestry of Scotland. Hastings is poised to become a pivotal centre for historical learning, given its links to the pivotal Battle of 1066.

Extending the Reach of Cultural Heritage

In a further effort to broaden the tapestry’s reach, the Stothard Cast, the earliest known replica of the Bayeux Tapestry, will embark on a nationwide tour across England, Scotland, and Wales. This initiative aims to bring this remarkable episode of shared British and French history to audiences far beyond London.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed, “Britain and France have a unique shared history and nothing symbolises it more than the Bayeux Tapestry. This will be the first generation in 1,000 years able to witness this unique part of our heritage, and we are committed to ensuring that children from all backgrounds across every part of Britain have the chance to see it.” She further noted the British Museum’s dedication to creating a memorable experience for British children, highlighting the cultural significance of this endeavour.

Fostering International Cooperation

Dr Nicholas Cullinan OBE, Director of the British Museum, remarked, “Since this historic loan was announced last year, we have been committed to making this a significant cultural moment for the whole of the UK. The Bayeux Around Britain programme will help ensure that this once-in-a-generation exhibition is not confined to London but accessible to tens of millions across the country. It is the most ambitious and inclusive programme we or any museum in the UK has ever undertaken.”

Following the exhibition at the British Museum, President Macron is expected to meet with Prime Minister Burnham at Downing Street on Thursday, where the two leaders will discuss a range of shared challenges and opportunities, including migration, trade, energy, and ongoing international issues such as Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
