The United Kingdom is set to revolutionise military operations with the introduction of its first foot-launched military paraglider systems, offering troops the unprecedented ability to take to the skies independently without the need for runways, helicopters, or drop aircraft. This innovative advancement comes from British start-up Blakcro, which has developed a rucksack-sized powered paraglider specifically designed for covert missions in hostile environments.

With generous backing of approximately £6 million from the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Blakcro’s paraglider systems allow pilots to self-launch by running, utilising their own physical power in conjunction with the glider’s engine. This capability will enable soldiers to infiltrate enemy territory discreetly, a significant tactical advantage in modern warfare.

Innovative Design for Stealth Missions

Based in Wiltshire, Blakcro has engineered these unique gliders with a focus on military applications, committed to supplying operational systems from this year through to 2027. The glider is designed to fold into a compact case similar in size to a large rucksack, allowing for assembly in under eight minutes, even in complete darkness. Its low acoustic, visual, and radar signatures contribute to stealth operations, making it ideal for covert insertions.

Constructed around a robust UK-made titanium airframe, the glider boasts an impressive range of up to 200 miles on its own power. It is also equipped to carry essential military gear, including body armour, night vision equipment, and weapon mounts. The technology has already been deployed in operational settings, with contracts established both across the UK and with NATO allies. The Royal Marines and the Parachute Regiment are preparing to trial this innovative approach to air mobility in the near future.

Government Support for Defence Innovation

Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “With UK Defence Innovation supporting SMEs like Blakcro from the drawing board through to deployment, we are building a more resilient, homegrown defence supply chain and ensuring our armed forces receive the pioneering equipment that can give them the edge on the battlefield.” He emphasised the government’s commitment to fostering British innovation, which not only enhances military capabilities but also creates employment opportunities in regions such as Wiltshire.

Blakcro’s engagement with UKDI, part of the MOD’s National Armaments Director Group, began through the Open Call for Innovation. Since then, the company has received support across multiple projects, including a Defence Innovation Loan that has facilitated its transition from a single product to full-scale production. This growth trajectory aligns with UKDI’s broader ambition to fortify the UK’s sovereign defence supply chain.

Expanding Workforce and Capabilities

Since obtaining support from UKDI, Blakcro has expanded its workforce from three to eleven employees and now holds three prime contracts with both the UK and NATO allies. Sam Wedgwood, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Blakcro, highlighted the rapid progress facilitated by UKDI, stating, “From a UKDI success story perspective, we have very rapidly moved from base technology in 2024, through UKDI-supported rapid innovation, to operational use by 2026. We could not have achieved this pace without the support we received – not just the funding, but the commercialisation support and access to the right people.”

This partnership between Blakcro and UKDI exemplifies the government’s commitment to supporting agile, homegrown innovators in delivering advanced military capabilities and fostering sustainable growth. It serves to strengthen the UK’s defence industrial base while ensuring that the armed forces remain equipped to address emerging threats effectively.
