Brighouse Flood Scheme Revitalises Local Park: A Transformation to Explore

Wellholme Park has officially reopened to the public following the completion of extensive renovations under the Brighouse Flood Alleviation Scheme. This initiative aims to mitigate flood risks, foster a biodiverse habitat, and create a more inviting space for the local community.

The park welcomed visitors back on Wednesday, 29th July, hosting an open day that allowed residents to experience the enhancements firsthand. Attendees were invited to explore a ‘Discovery Trail’ throughout the day, providing an engaging way to learn about the modifications made to the park.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Environment

The renovation works represent a significant collaboration between the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council, both of which are committed to reducing flood risk for homes and businesses in Brighouse while enhancing the local ecosystem. By redesigning the flow of water across the landscape, the initiative seeks to work in harmony with nature rather than countering it.

New flood storage areas and a reconfigured river channel have been introduced to improve water management during periods of heavy rainfall. The removal of old weirs and walls has allowed for a more natural river flow, which not only enhances the river’s health but also lessens the chances of flooding downstream.

At full capacity, Wellholme Park can retain approximately 8,900 cubic metres of water—equivalent to the volume of 24 of Brighouse’s main swimming pools—before gradually releasing it back into the river over the course of one to two days.

A Year-Round Community Space

For the majority of the year, Wellholme Park serves as a vibrant recreational area. While shallow channels may carry small volumes of water, the park remains dry, open, and crafted for everyday enjoyment. Enhancements have also been made alongside the adjacent Whinney Hill Park, improving access and creating a more diverse and resilient environment throughout the year.

Jo Arnold, Programme and Partnership Manager for the Environment Agency in Calderdale, expressed enthusiasm about the park’s reopening, stating: “We’re pleased to welcome the community back to Wellholme Park. The improvements not only reduce flood risk in Brighouse, create a biodiverse habitat and enhance the river, but also ensure that the park remains an enjoyable and accessible space for everyone. We encourage people to come and explore the changes for themselves.”

Addressing Climate Challenges

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, emphasised the significance of the scheme in light of climate challenges, saying: “Here in West Yorkshire, we know all too well the devastation caused by floods, and how important it is to invest in our beautiful landscapes to slow the flow of water. With record-breaking heatwaves in the summer and one-in-a-hundred-year floods in the winter, now is the time to invest in Brighouse and beyond to protect homes and businesses, boost wildlife and biodiversity, and create a greener, nature-rich region that works for all.”

Cllr Darren Commons, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Calderdale Council, highlighted the importance of parks as community assets: “I’m delighted that Wellholme Park is now reopening, allowing local people and visitors to enjoy the green space, especially during the busy school summer holidays. The facilities and beautiful surroundings of Wellholme Park have been cherished by the people of Brighouse for generations, but the park now also plays an essential role in safeguarding the town and nearby properties from flooding.”

Successful Partnership for Flood Prevention

The Brighouse Flood Alleviation Scheme has been realised through a partnership involving Calderdale Council, designers ARUP, and contractors BAM. The project not only showcases how flood defence infrastructure can complement community spaces but also demonstrates a commitment to enhancing wildlife habitats and creating landscaping features, such as walkways and paths, to ensure the park remains accessible throughout the year.
